Mammography + Ultrasound: best clinics abroad

We will pick a clinic for youFree, 3 options with prices →

A mammogram and breast ultrasound provide different views of breast tissue. A clinician may request both when assessing a breast lump, a change noticed during examination or an abnormal screening result. Having two imaging tests does not mean that cancer has been diagnosed. The choice depends on the clinical question, previous findings and individual circumstances; a combined package is not necessary for every person attending routine screening.

When arranging breast imaging abroad, ask for a coordinated assessment rather than booking tests by name alone. Send the referral and earlier reports, clarify whether original images are needed and agree who will explain the findings. Compare written estimates that identify the mammogram, ultrasound and specialist consultation separately. Ask how the clinic will deliver your report and images, whether translation is included and how any recommended follow-up will be organised after you return home.

When are both breast imaging tests needed?

Diagnostic assessment investigates a symptom or an earlier abnormal finding; screening checks people without symptoms. For a new lump, age and clinical findings influence the first test. A clinician may combine mammography and ultrasound to answer a specific question. Discuss new nipple or skin changes promptly rather than waiting for a trip or routine screening invitation.

What do mammography and ultrasound show?

Mammography uses low-dose X-rays; ultrasound uses sound waves and can help distinguish a fluid-filled cyst from a solid lump. Some calcifications appear on mammograms but are not visible on ultrasound. Dense breast tissue can make mammograms harder to interpret, but density alone does not determine the best additional test. Review the choice with a breast specialist; see the breast care and mammology section for related services.

Preparation and the examination

Bring previous breast images and reports. Tell the team about possible pregnancy, implants, earlier surgery and symptoms. Avoid deodorant, antiperspirant and talcum powder on the examination day, following the clinic's instructions. Mammography involves brief compression, which may be uncomfortable; tell the mammographer if it hurts. For ultrasound, a probe moves over gel on the skin. These are separate imaging stages.

Appointment length and results

Confirm the time reserved for both tests and consultation: a screening mammogram appointment length is not a reliable estimate for a combined diagnostic visit. Image acquisition and issuing the final report are different stages. Ask when the signed report will arrive, who will discuss it and how to contact the team if it does not arrive as agreed.

Cost and planning an assessment abroad

Request an itemised estimate stating whether the examination is diagnostic or screening, whether additional views are included, and whether consultation, image copies and translation cost extra. A biopsy, if recommended, is a separate procedure; ask for a revised estimate before agreeing. Compare equivalent services, cancellation terms and arrangements for continuing care at home.

Frequently asked questions

Can ultrasound replace a mammogram?

Not routinely. The methods answer different questions, and ultrasound can miss findings visible on mammography.

Does an abnormal result mean breast cancer?

No. Further views, follow-up imaging or a biopsy may be needed to explain a finding.

Does normal imaging rule out every cause of a lump?

No. A persistent or new lump still needs clinical follow-up, even with normal images.

Will I receive the results on the same day?

Do not assume so. Confirm the reporting deadline and consultation arrangements before booking travel.
