Dermatology covers the assessment and treatment of skin, hair and nail conditions. These include inflammatory diseases such as acne, eczema and psoriasis, infections, pigment changes, hair loss and skin tumors. Similar-looking changes can have different causes. The dermatologist considers their appearance, development, symptoms, previous treatment and relevant medical history before deciding whether further tests are useful. A photograph or a technology name alone cannot determine the full care plan.
Treatment may involve skin care, medicines applied to the skin, systemic medicines, light treatment or a procedure, depending on the diagnosis. Not everyone needs a biopsy, a mole-mapping program or advanced therapy. Before a consultation, list medicines and products you use and provide previous reports. Ask about the intended benefit, possible adverse effects and follow-up. A changing or suspicious lesion should be assessed promptly rather than left until a planned overseas visit.

Explain when the change appeared, whether it itches, hurts or bleeds, and how it has evolved. Previous photographs may help show the course. The dermatologist may examine the affected area and other sites according to the concern. Hair and nail changes also need an assessment of possible causes.
A new or changing pigmented lesion, persistent bleeding or a nonhealing area should be checked. Many findings are benign, but appearance alone should not lead to an assumption that a lesion is harmless.
Dermoscopy can help assess particular skin lesions. Serial photographs or mole mapping may be useful for selected patients. A biopsy provides tissue for microscopic examination when needed to clarify a diagnosis, including suspected skin cancer. Dermoscopy does not replace tissue examination when that is indicated.
Other tests are chosen for the suspected condition. Ask what each result could change and whether existing pathology material should be reviewed. Cosmetic destruction of an uncertain lesion may not provide the tissue needed for diagnosis.
Options can include topical treatment, systemic medicines, phototherapy or surgery. Their suitability differs between acne, psoriasis, eczema and tumors. Biologic medicines and other advanced treatments require specific indications and monitoring. Mohs surgery is considered for selected skin cancers, not every skin lesion.
Discuss likely benefits, adverse effects, practical demands and alternatives. Some conditions need continuing management and review rather than a single procedure. If skin cancer is confirmed, the plan may require input from oncology or other specialists according to its type and extent.
Bring a medicine and skin-product list, previous biopsy reports and relevant treatment records. Ask whether a remote review can answer the question or an examination is necessary. Clarify how results will be explained, who will monitor treatment and when to report new changes.
A widespread blistering or peeling rash with mouth or eye involvement can be an emergency. Seek urgent local care, especially after a new medicine, rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
No. The clinician decides whether assessment, monitoring or sampling is appropriate.
No. A suspicious lesion may still need biopsy and microscopic examination.
No. Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, previous response and risks.
