Neurology concerns disorders of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. A neurologist assesses problems such as headaches, seizures, movement disorders, changes in memory, numbness and weakness. Similar symptoms can have different causes, so the diagnosis depends on the history and examination rather than a standard test package. People with a known condition may also need review of treatment, side effects or changes in everyday function.
Care may involve medicines, rehabilitation, changes in daily habits, monitoring or referral to another specialist. Selected conditions have surgical or device-based options, but these are not appropriate for everyone. Children may need a pediatric neurologist. Before a consultation, prepare a symptom timeline, previous results and a medicine list. Ask which questions the assessment will address, whether existing investigations are sufficient and how the proposed plan will be reviewed over time.

The neurologist asks when symptoms began, how they change and what affects them. Examination may assess strength, sensation, reflexes, coordination, walking, speech and cognition according to the problem. Information from a relative or witness can be helpful for memory changes or episodes of altered awareness.
Explain previous treatment and effects on sleep, work or daily activities. For suspected seizures, the sequence before, during and after an event matters. A seizure does not automatically establish epilepsy.
MRI or CT can assess structures of the brain or spine. EEG records electrical activity in the brain and may help investigate seizures; nerve conduction studies and electromyography assess particular nerve or muscle problems. Blood tests, cerebrospinal fluid analysis or genetic testing may be indicated for specific questions.
These methods answer different questions and are not required together for every patient. An imaging finding must be interpreted alongside the clinical assessment. Ask how the result might change management before arranging additional investigations.
The approach depends on the diagnosis. Migraine, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease and peripheral neuropathy require different management. Medicines may address symptoms or the disease process where appropriate. Rehabilitation and practical support can help with function, communication or daily activities.
Selected patients may benefit from a neurosurgical assessment, including consideration of particular epilepsy procedures or deep brain stimulation. Unsuccessful medication does not automatically make surgery the next step. The team must assess the specific indication, possible benefit and risks.
Agree on goals and follow-up, including how adverse effects will be managed. Do not change prescribed treatment without discussing it with the clinician. Coordinate rehabilitation when needed and clarify who will continue care after a second opinion or return home.
Sudden face or limb weakness, speech difficulty or suspected stroke requires emergency care, even if symptoms improve. A first seizure also needs urgent assessment. A planned consultation or trip must not delay local emergency treatment.
No. The clinical findings and question determine whether imaging is useful.
No. It investigates particular questions about brain electrical activity.
No. Surgical options have specific indications and require specialist selection.
A symptom history, treatment records, reports and original imaging files as requested by the team.
