DaTSCAN SPECT is a nuclear medicine examination that shows dopamine transporter activity in a part of the brain called the striatum. It uses an injected radioactive tracer, ioflupane labelled with iodine-123, and a gamma camera. A specialist may request it when a movement disorder remains clinically uncertain, for example to help distinguish essential tremor from a Parkinsonian syndrome. It may also support assessment of suspected dementia with Lewy bodies.
Patients seeking an assessment abroad may benefit from a coordinated neurological consultation and an appropriately selected scan. The images provide additional evidence, rather than a diagnosis on their own. DaTSCAN cannot reliably distinguish Parkinson’s disease from every other degenerative Parkinsonian condition. Before travelling, confirm the clinical question, review medicines that might affect the images and allow for both the injection and a later imaging appointment. The specialist explains how the findings fit the examination and other investigations.

DaTSCAN SPECT supports assessment of adults with selected, uncertain neurological diagnoses. It can show a pattern consistent with loss of dopamine transporter activity. This helps answer particular questions about tremor or suspected dementia with Lewy bodies, rather than investigate every cause of dizziness, memory difficulty or poor balance.
An abnormal result does not by itself distinguish Parkinson’s disease, multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy. The clinical assessment remains essential. Discuss the purpose and possible consequences of the result with a neurology specialist before arranging travel.
Provide a complete list of prescribed medicines, non-prescription products and relevant substances. Some can affect tracer binding or image interpretation. The referring doctor and nuclear medicine department decide whether any adjustment is appropriate; do not stop medication independently. Tell staff about allergies, kidney or liver problems, possible pregnancy and breastfeeding.
The department supplies instructions about thyroid protection, usually involving a medicine given before the tracer. Follow that specific plan. Eating and drinking rules and any arrangements for support should be confirmed in advance. Mention claustrophobia, difficulty lying flat or involuntary movement that could make imaging challenging.
The tracer is injected into a vein. Imaging commonly starts three to six hours later, so the whole visit is longer than the scan itself. Ask whether you may leave the department during the waiting period and when to return.
During SPECT, you lie with your head supported while the camera moves around it. Keeping still helps image quality. Imaging often takes approximately thirty to sixty minutes, depending on the equipment and protocol. A specialist reports the scan; agree how the referring clinician will explain the findings.
The examination involves ionising radiation and should have a justified clinical purpose. Injection discomfort, headache or an allergic reaction are possible; report feeling unwell promptly. Follow the department’s advice about fluids, toileting, breastfeeding and close contact after the test. If travelling soon afterwards, ask about a letter for airport radiation monitors.
Costs depend on the tracer, imaging, specialist reporting and consultation. Confirm that thyroid protection and follow-up discussion are included.
No. The tracer is used for diagnostic imaging.
No. A specialist requests it when the result could help resolve a particular diagnostic question.
Image acquisition and specialist interpretation are separate. Ask about the reporting and review schedule.
