An EEG, or electroencephalogram, records electrical activity naturally produced by the brain using electrodes placed on the scalp. The recording does not send an electrical current into the brain. A clinician may request EEG when the history and examination suggest epileptic seizures, to help assess seizure type or answer another specific neurological question. Results need specialist interpretation: a normal EEG does not exclude epilepsy, and an abnormal recording does not automatically establish that diagnosis.
When arranging an EEG abroad, send the referral, a description of typical episodes, previous EEG reports and a current medication list. Confirm whether the requested examination is a routine recording, a sleep or sleep-deprived study, ambulatory monitoring or video EEG. These approaches answer different questions and require different arrangements. Ask about preparation, any activation procedures, written reporting and a consultation to discuss the findings. The recording appointment and the specialist's report may have different completion times.

EEG helps clinicians assess patterns of brain electrical activity. It supports an assessment based on symptoms, eyewitness accounts, examination and other tests. Some people with epilepsy have a normal recording between events. Abnormal findings also need context: they are not all specific to epilepsy. The specialist considers the full picture rather than diagnosing from the word abnormal alone.
A routine EEG records activity during a clinic visit. Sleep recordings may reveal information not seen while awake. A neurologist may request a sleep-deprived study, ambulatory recording during daily activities, or video EEG to relate behaviour and movements to the electrical recording. The choice depends on the question and previous findings; longer monitoring is not automatically necessary.
Follow the department's instructions about clean hair, hair products, meals and sleep. Bring a medication list and do not change prescribed treatment without your doctor's advice. If sleep deprivation is requested, obtain specific instructions about sleep, accompaniment, transport and driving before making travel plans.
A trained professional positions small electrodes on your scalp with paste or another suitable attachment. You sit or lie comfortably while the signals are recorded and may be asked to open and close your eyes. Tell staff about skin sensitivities or discomfort.
Deep breathing and flashing lights can add diagnostic information, but they are not appropriate for everyone. The team should review your health, explain the benefits and risks, including the possibility of a seizure, and seek consent before these procedures. Discuss concerns before the recording. Sleep deprivation can also increase seizure risk and requires an agreed plan.
Ask for an itemised quotation stating the recording type, monitoring arrangements, interpretation and consultation. Confirm report language, translation and whether complete EEG data and any relevant video can be provided for a second opinion. Agree a secure transfer method and follow-up with your doctor at home.
EEG records electrical activity. If a structural cause is suspected, the clinician may also request MRI. Confirm separately which examinations are recommended and included.
No. A normal recording does not exclude it. Further assessment or a different recording may be appropriate.
Not automatically. A specialist must interpret the pattern with the clinical history.
Ask when analysis and written reporting will be completed, and who will explain the results. Finishing the recording is a separate stage.
No. Follow the instructions for your specific booking; sleep deprivation is a planned option, not routine preparation for every test.
