FLAIR is an MRI sequence that reduces the signal from cerebrospinal fluid, helping certain abnormalities stand out in brain images. It does not inherently require a contrast injection. In a contrast-enhanced brain MRI, FLAIR is one part of a broader examination that may include several sequences before and after gadolinium administration. The referring doctor and radiologist select the protocol for the clinical question. Brain MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves without ionising radiation; the images must be interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings and earlier investigations.
Before booking, ask whether your referral requires contrast and which sequences are included. Tell the clinic about implanted devices, pregnancy, kidney disease and previous contrast reactions. Bring earlier images and reports for comparison. A bright area on FLAIR is not a diagnosis on its own, and the sequence cannot reveal every abnormality. Request a quote that distinguishes the scan, contrast, radiology report and consultation, and confirm the report delivery date separately from your appointment duration.

FLAIR stands for fluid-attenuated inversion recovery. Suppressing the bright signal from cerebrospinal fluid can make some tissue changes easier to distinguish, particularly near fluid-filled spaces. It is an imaging technique, not a separate diagnosis or a guarantee of detecting all disease. Its findings are assessed with the other sequences in the examination.
Doctors use brain MRI to investigate selected neurological symptoms or monitor known conditions. It may contribute to assessing tumours, inflammation, infection or demyelinating disease, including multiple sclerosis. The appropriate examination depends on the clinical history; having headaches or dizziness does not automatically mean that contrast is needed. Send the referral before booking so the clinic can confirm whether the requested protocol answers the doctor’s question.
FLAIR can be acquired without an injection. Gadolinium contrast may provide additional information in selected cases, and the protocol may include images taken after its administration. The radiologist decides which sequences and contrast use are appropriate. Ask why contrast is proposed and whether it changes the investigation. Further information is available in our contrast MRI guide.
Provide the exact model and safety documents for any implanted device. MRI eligibility depends on its labelling and the scanner conditions. Tell staff about kidney disease, previous reactions and pregnancy; gadolinium is generally avoided during pregnancy unless specifically justified. Kidney function testing may be requested before contrast. Follow the clinic’s instructions about food, medicines and removing metallic belongings.
Discuss claustrophobia or difficulty lying still in advance. Staff provide hearing protection, and movement can reduce image quality. If sedation is necessary, arrange the required preparation and transport home. The general MRI information explains practical aspects of the examination.
Scanner time and reporting time are separate. Request the clinic’s estimate for each, particularly if you are travelling for care. The final cost depends on the agreed protocol and any additional services.
No. Similar signal changes can have different explanations. A clinician considers the scan pattern, symptoms and other investigations.
No. FLAIR itself does not require gadolinium. The need for contrast depends on the clinical question.
Discuss it with the referring doctor. Further imaging or other tests may be recommended when a finding remains uncertain.
