Coronary stenting places a small mesh tube inside a narrowed or blocked artery supplying the heart. It is usually performed as part of percutaneous coronary intervention, or PCI: a catheter and balloon reach the affected artery, and the expanded stent remains there to support blood flow. Access is generally through an artery at the wrist or groin, with local anaesthesia. The procedure can be planned for suitable coronary disease or performed urgently during certain heart attacks.
For a planned consultation abroad, the key issue is whether PCI is appropriate compared with medicines or bypass surgery. Decisions depend on symptoms, coronary anatomy, the heart's function and other medical conditions. Stenting treats a particular narrowing but does not remove the underlying tendency to atherosclerosis. Continuing medicines, including the prescribed antiplatelet treatment, and follow-up remain essential. Before travelling, arrange a review of existing angiography, medication access and recovery support. Suspected heart attack symptoms require immediate local emergency care; they should not be delayed to organise overseas treatment.

Coronary stenting may restore flow in an emergency or relieve symptoms from suitable coronary disease. For a planned procedure, the cardiologist reviews the effect of medicines, evidence of reduced blood supply and the pattern of narrowed arteries. More complex disease may require discussion of coronary artery bypass grafting. A visible narrowing does not by itself mean that a stent is the appropriate choice.
Bring angiography images, heart investigations and a complete medication list. The assessment considers kidney function, bleeding risk, allergies and other conditions. Fasting and medication instructions come from the treating team. During PCI, a catheter is guided under X-ray imaging, and contrast shows the coronary arteries. A wire and balloon reach the chosen narrowing; the stent expands and remains after the balloon and catheter are removed. Additional imaging or measurements may help guide a complex intervention.
Antiplatelet medicines help prevent a clot forming in the stent. The choice and duration depend on the clinical situation and bleeding risk. Do not stop or change them without advice from the responsible clinician, including before dental work or another operation. Make sure the supply and follow-up arrangements will continue across countries. Other treatment for cholesterol, blood pressure or symptoms may still be needed.
Staff monitor the access site, heart symptoms and recovery. Hospital stay and return to activities depend on whether the procedure was planned, involved a heart attack or had complications. Cardiac rehabilitation may help with exercise, confidence and risk-factor management. Ask about lifting, driving and travel rather than relying on a standard timetable.
Risks include access-site bleeding, artery damage, contrast reactions, kidney problems, heart attack and stroke. A stent can develop clotting or recurrent narrowing. New persistent chest pain, breathlessness, major bleeding or a cold painful limb requires urgent medical attention. The estimate depends on the number and complexity of lesions, devices, imaging, inpatient care and follow-up; clarify what happens if additional treatment is needed.
No. Ongoing treatment and risk-factor management remain necessary.
No. Changes must be agreed with the clinician because stent clotting can be serious.
No. Some patterns of disease are better assessed for surgery.
The team advises after reviewing the procedure, heart condition and recovery.
