Heart valve repair aims to restore the function of a patient’s own valve by reshaping its leaflets, supporting the valve ring or repairing supporting structures. It may be suitable for selected valve disorders, particularly some forms of mitral or tricuspid regurgitation. Whether repair is appropriate depends on which valve is affected, the cause and severity of disease, heart function and the likelihood of a lasting result. Some patients need valve replacement or a catheter-based procedure instead.
Patients may seek assessment abroad for a complex repair opinion, review of imaging or access to a team experienced in a particular technique. Ask how repairability is assessed, what happens if replacement becomes necessary and whether a smaller-incision approach suits the case. The incision size alone does not establish the best option. Before travelling, arrange rehabilitation, medicine supplies and echocardiographic follow-up at home. Repair does not guarantee lifelong freedom from further treatment.

A valve team reviews symptoms, echocardiography and the effect of valve disease on heart chambers. The cause of leakage matters: diseased leaflets and leakage caused by changes in the surrounding heart require different plans. Selected people may need intervention before symptoms develop. Mild disease may need monitoring. Durable repair is preferred in suitable cases, but is not possible for every valve.
Repair may reshape leaflets, replace damaged supporting chords or tighten and support an enlarged valve ring with an annuloplasty ring. The technique depends on the defect. Surgical repair may use a chest incision or a smaller-incision approach, usually with cardiopulmonary bypass. Selected patients may be assessed for transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, which brings leaflet edges together using a device. This is a different pathway with specific anatomical requirements.
Before treatment, tests clarify valve anatomy, heart function and any other cardiac disease. The team reviews medicines, infections, dental health, lung and kidney function, and gives fasting instructions. Discuss the chance of conversion to valve replacement and any additional operation beforehand.
After surgery, staff monitor breathing, rhythm, bleeding and valve function. Mobilisation increases gradually. Wound care and restrictions depend on the approach and any breastbone incision. Cardiac rehabilitation supports a safe return to activity.
Echocardiography checks the repair after treatment and during follow-up. Anticoagulant or antiplatelet treatment is individual: the procedure, rhythm problems and other conditions affect the prescription. Do not stop medicines without advice. Continue dental care and tell dental professionals about the repair; ask the cardiac team when infection prevention measures are needed.
Risks include bleeding, infection, clots, stroke, rhythm disturbance, kidney injury and persistent or recurrent valve leakage. Some patients require a pacemaker or another intervention. New severe breathlessness, chest pain or stroke symptoms need emergency assessment; fever or wound changes require prompt advice. Costs depend on the valve, access, devices, additional surgery, admission and rehabilitation.
No. Anatomy, tissue quality and expected durability determine whether repair is suitable.
No. The operation, general health and complications also affect recovery.
Not automatically. The team decides according to the procedure and other medical conditions.
