Liposuction removes selected deposits of fat beneath the skin through a thin suction tube. Its usual cosmetic purpose is to change the contour of areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips or upper arms. It is not a treatment for obesity and does not reliably remove cellulite, stretch marks or excess loose skin. Suitability depends on general health, weight stability, skin elasticity and realistic expectations about the proposed change.
For surgery abroad, meet the operating surgeon before committing to a plan and discuss the areas to be treated, anaesthesia, alternatives and recovery arrangements. The extent of surgery matters more than a technology name: larger treated areas and combined procedures can increase risk. Ask how postoperative checks and urgent care will be provided, and when travelling home would be appropriate. The final contour develops as swelling settles, so photographs immediately after surgery cannot show the finished result. An individual consultation is needed to assess likely benefits and limitations.

The operation targets localised subcutaneous fat. It does not remove fat around internal organs or replace treatment for excess body weight. Skin may retract after fat removal, but poor elasticity can leave looseness or unevenness. When excess skin is the main concern, the surgeon may discuss another operation. An assessment in plastic surgery should connect the technique to your anatomy and goals.
The surgeon reviews previous procedures, illnesses, medicines, supplements, smoking and clotting risks. Tell the team about weight changes and future pregnancy plans. Any changes to medicines or nicotine use should follow a clinical plan; do not stop prescribed anticoagulants independently. Appropriate tests and anaesthetic assessment depend on your health and the proposed extent of surgery.
Small incisions allow a cannula to loosen and suction fat. Fluid containing medicines may be used in the treated area. Some techniques use ultrasound, laser energy or powered movement, but a device label does not guarantee a better result or eliminate complications. Anaesthesia and whether an overnight stay is needed are individual decisions.
Bruising, swelling, soreness and altered sensation are common after surgery. The team may recommend compression garments and provide wound care instructions. Activity, work, exercise and travel should resume according to recovery and medical advice. Arrange support after anaesthesia and attend the agreed checks. The contour may continue changing while swelling resolves.
Possible complications include infection, bleeding, fluid collections, persistent numbness, irregular contours and loose skin. Less common serious problems include blood clots, fat embolism, injury to deeper structures and harmful fluid shifts. Energy-assisted methods can also cause burns. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain or marked deterioration requires urgent medical assessment. Discuss how complications and any later corrective surgery would be managed before booking.
Its aim is contouring. It should not be chosen as an obesity treatment or a substitute for a weight management plan.
That depends partly on skin elasticity. Loose skin can remain, and a separate procedure may be discussed.
Yes. Weight changes, ageing and pregnancy can alter the result even after fat has been removed.
Recovery and clotting risk need individual assessment. Agree the timing with the surgical team rather than relying on a fixed package itinerary.
