Capsule colonoscopy uses a swallowed camera capsule to collect images of the lining of the large bowel. Pictures are transmitted to a portable recorder and later reviewed by a trained clinician. Swallowing the capsule generally does not require sedation, but bowel preparation is still essential. The test differs from a capsule examination designed mainly for the small intestine, so the exact device and purpose should be clear before booking.
A colon capsule may be considered when conventional colonoscopy cannot be completed or is unsuitable for an individual patient. It can identify abnormalities, but it cannot remove a polyp or obtain tissue for a biopsy. A subsequent colonoscopy may therefore be necessary. For patients travelling abroad, useful arrangements include specialist assessment, clear preparation instructions, a report review and access to follow-up procedures if needed. Suitability depends on symptoms, previous investigations and the risk of capsule retention. The convenience of swallowing a capsule should be weighed against these limits and the available alternatives.

Capsule colonoscopy can show polyps, inflamed areas and other abnormalities on the bowel lining. A clinician checks both the findings and whether the colon was adequately visualised. Unclear images or an incomplete recording cannot reliably exclude a problem in the unseen area. Any suspicious lesion may require conventional colonoscopy for biopsy or treatment.
A specialist centre may consider a colon capsule after incomplete colonoscopy. Its role in other situations depends on the clinical question and local practice. CT colonography is another possible alternative. Patients with concerning symptoms or a likely need for tissue sampling require a plan that allows prompt diagnosis; a capsule is not automatically the best first test. Previous reports and the reasons an earlier examination was unsuccessful help guide the decision.
The service provides instructions for diet, bowel-cleansing medicines and, where needed, medicines to help the capsule progress. Tell the team about swallowing problems, previous abdominal surgery, suspected bowel narrowing, pregnancy, kidney or heart disease and implanted medical devices. Further assessment of bowel patency may be necessary when retention is a concern. Changes to regular medicines should be agreed with the clinical team.
After swallowing the capsule, you wear sensors and a recorder. Follow the service's instructions about food, fluids and activity. Recording takes much of the day, but movement through the bowel varies and may not finish before the device stops recording. Equipment is returned so the images can be downloaded. A specialist then reviews them; ask separately about the reporting time and how the results will be discussed.
Risks include capsule retention, missed abnormalities, incomplete imaging and equipment problems. Bowel-cleansing medicines can cause dehydration or other adverse effects. Do not undergo MRI until capsule passage has been confirmed. Severe abdominal pain, vomiting or significant distension requires urgent medical advice. A retained capsule may need specialist treatment or retrieval.
The estimate can include the capsule, preparation, interpretation, additional safety checks and any later endoscopy. Compare options through the diagnostics section, and allow time for follow-up when arranging travel.
No. Polyp removal and tissue sampling require a separate endoscopic procedure.
No. Clear views and a complete examination depend on adequate preparation.
No. Interpretation depends on image quality, completeness and the clinical question.
After the team confirms that the capsule has passed and clears the planned scan.
