Gastroscopy with biopsy combines examination of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum with collection of small tissue samples. The endoscopist takes these through the scope, without a skin incision, and sends them for appropriate laboratory analysis. Sampling can help investigate inflammation, Helicobacter pylori infection, changes in the oesophageal lining or suspicious areas. A biopsy does not automatically mean that cancer is suspected, and the examination is not itself a cancer treatment.
Assessment abroad may be considered when previous findings need clarification or a specialist endoscopy and pathology review is appropriate. Before travelling, share earlier reports and any available pathology conclusions. Ask which areas will be sampled and what the laboratory will investigate, rather than assuming every possible test is included. Clarify anaesthesia arrangements, preparation, the expected reporting schedule and the follow-up consultation. An itemised estimate should distinguish the examination, sampling, laboratory analysis and interpretation, with a plan for continuing care at home.

Biopsy adds microscopic information to the visual findings from gastroscopy. Depending on the clinical question, it can help assess gastritis, H. pylori infection, Barrett's oesophagus or a suspicious lesion. Samples are selected for a purpose; the site and number vary. Barrett's changes can be patchy, so assessment may require samples from several areas.
Follow the centre's fasting instructions so the stomach is empty. Provide a full medication list and report allergies, pregnancy, diabetes and significant heart or lung disease. Ask specifically about medicines affecting blood clotting. Do not stop them or change other treatment independently; the team balances bleeding risk against the risks of interrupting therapy.
The scope usually passes through the mouth. Throat spray, sedation or an individually agreed anaesthesia plan helps with comfort. Small forceps passed through the scope collect tissue from the lining; sampling itself is generally not felt. Gagging or bloating from the examination can still occur. A straightforward diagnostic procedure may take around 5–15 minutes, while additional work and recovery increase the total visit time.
If sedated, arrange an escort and follow the restrictions on driving and important decisions afterwards. After throat anaesthetic, ask staff when eating and drinking are safe. A sore throat or bloating may occur. Complications include bleeding at a sampling site, perforation, aspiration and reactions to sedation. Seek urgent assessment for significant bleeding, black stools, fever or severe chest or abdominal pain.
A pathologist examines the tissue; selected tests for infection may also be requested. The endoscopy description and laboratory report answer different questions. Laboratory processing can take days to several weeks. Agree who will explain the combined findings and what happens if symptoms persist or further testing is required.
Ask whether the estimate includes sedation, tissue sampling, pathology, additional requested analyses and the results consultation. Clarify charges for reviewing previous samples and arrange report copies for your home clinician.
No. Routine sampling takes small pieces for diagnosis. Removing a lesion is a separate treatment with its own assessment and consent.
No. Visual findings may be explained first; tissue needs laboratory processing.
Imaging can answer other questions, but a routine scan cannot collect mucosal tissue through an endoscope. Discuss which investigation matches your needs.
