Gastroscopy examines the lining of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum using a flexible tube with a small camera. A doctor may recommend it to investigate swallowing difficulty, persistent upper digestive symptoms, suspected bleeding or other findings that need direct examination. Small tissue samples can be collected when laboratory analysis will help answer the clinical question. The procedure examines the upper digestive tract; it does not replace colonoscopy or investigate every cause of abdominal symptoms.
Assessment abroad may be considered for a specialist review of previous findings or a coordinated diagnostic visit. Choosing a centre involves checking the endoscopy service, anaesthesia arrangements and access to appropriate pathology when sampling is planned. Send earlier reports and a medication list before travelling. Ask why the examination is needed, what preparation applies and how results will be explained. An itemised estimate and a clear follow-up plan help connect the visit with continuing care at home.

Gastroscopy can identify changes such as inflammation, ulcers or narrowing in the upper digestive tract. It may also help investigate anaemia, swallowing difficulty or suspicious findings. The indication should follow a gastroenterology assessment. Biopsy can provide information that visual inspection alone cannot; it is not required solely because the examination is performed.
The stomach needs to be empty for a clear view and to reduce aspiration risk. Follow the clinic's instructions on food and fluids. Tell the team about pregnancy, allergies, previous anaesthetic problems and all medicines, including blood thinners, diabetes treatment and weight-loss injections. Medication adjustments depend on your circumstances; do not make them independently.
Discuss throat spray, sedation or another appropriate anaesthesia plan before the visit. Sedation does not necessarily mean a general anaesthetic. If it is used, arrange an escort and follow the team's restrictions on driving, alcohol and activities requiring judgement afterwards.
The scope usually passes through the mouth while you lie on your side. A mouthguard protects the teeth and equipment. The team monitors you, and air may be introduced to improve the view. Gagging, pressure or bloating can occur; tell staff about discomfort. A diagnostic examination often takes approximately 5–30 minutes, with extra time for admission and recovery. Additional treatment can extend the procedure.
A sore throat or bloating may occur afterwards. After throat spray, wait until swallowing is safe and staff permit food and drinks. Possible complications include bleeding, perforation, aspiration and reactions to sedation. Seek urgent assessment for severe or worsening chest or abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, fever, vomiting blood or black tarry stools.
Visual findings may be explained before discharge. Biopsy analysis takes longer, sometimes several weeks; agree a reporting deadline and follow-up contact. A normal examination does not exclude every condition. Costs depend on consultation, anaesthesia, sampling, pathology and any agreed treatment. Clarify these items before travelling and request copies of the report.
No. Throat spray alone or sedation may be suitable. The choice depends on your needs and the team's assessment.
Not necessarily. Tissue can also help investigate inflammation and other conditions.
Sometimes imaging is an alternative or complementary test, but it provides different information and cannot take tissue samples. Discuss the appropriate choice with your doctor.
