Capsule endoscopy uses a swallowed camera to photograph the digestive tract, most commonly the small intestine. It can help investigate unexplained bleeding or iron deficiency anaemia when earlier examinations have not identified a cause, and selected cases of suspected or established Crohn’s disease. A gastroenterologist decides whether this examination addresses the clinical question and whether the capsule can pass safely. The usual video capsule records images; it does not take tissue samples or treat abnormalities.
Before arranging an examination abroad, send previous endoscopy reports, imaging and a medication list for assessment. Ask whether a preliminary patency test is needed, how preparation and recorder return are organised, and when the written interpretation will arrive. Coordinating these steps can help avoid travelling for an unsuitable test. Discuss arrangements for receiving images, reviewing findings and continuing care at home, including any further examination that the result may require.

The camera can reveal small bowel ulcers, inflammation, bleeding sites or suspected growths beyond the reach of standard examinations. It complements other investigations selected by a specialist in gastroenterology. Images alone may not establish a diagnosis; some findings require tissue sampling or treatment through another procedure.
Tell the team about swallowing difficulties, previous bowel obstruction or abdominal surgery, known intestinal narrowing, pregnancy and implanted devices. These details affect suitability. For selected patients, a dissolvable patency capsule helps assess passage before the camera capsule. The preliminary test also needs instructions and follow-up; it is not a guarantee that every risk has been excluded.
Follow the clinic’s instructions for diet, fasting and any bowel cleansing. Discuss iron, diabetes treatment and other medicines in advance without stopping prescribed treatment yourself. Bring previous reports so the team can assess which investigations are still necessary.
You swallow the capsule and wear a recording device, usually without sedation. Recording commonly lasts around 8–13 hours, depending on the system and protocol; the initial appointment is shorter. Follow instructions about food, drinks, activity and returning the recorder. Do not disconnect equipment early. If swallowing is difficult, the team may consider endoscopic placement with separate preparation and sedation arrangements.
The capsule passes naturally in the stool. Retention in a narrowed intestine can require endoscopic or surgical removal. Worsening abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, marked bloating or inability to pass gas or stool require urgent medical assessment locally. Contact the team if passage is uncertain.
A specialist reviews the recording before issuing a report, which may take days to several weeks. Poor cleansing or incomplete passage during recording can limit assessment. Ask how results and images will be shared, who will explain them and whether additional investigations are needed. The quotation should identify the capsule, preparation, interpretation, consultation and any indicated patency test or further procedure.
Not automatically. These examinations assess different areas and can obtain samples or provide treatment when indicated.
The usual video capsule cannot take tissue samples or remove polyps. A separate procedure may be needed.
Only after capsule passage has been confirmed according to the team’s instructions. Returning the recorder does not confirm that the capsule has left your body.
