Radiofrequency ablation of the liver uses electrical energy delivered through a needle-like probe to heat and destroy a defined tumour area. Ultrasound or CT guides placement, usually through the skin; some lesions require a laparoscopic or open approach. It may be suitable for selected small primary liver cancers or liver metastases. The decision depends on the size and number of lesions, their position, liver function and disease elsewhere. It is a local treatment and does not remove the whole liver or treat cancer throughout the body.
Care abroad may provide a specialist review comparing ablation with surgery, microwave treatment, other liver-directed techniques or systemic therapy. A useful programme combines interventional expertise with liver and cancer assessment. Before travelling, confirm the intended target, anaesthesia plan, recovery arrangements and follow-up imaging. Complete destruction cannot be guaranteed, and repeat ablation or another treatment may be needed if viable tumour remains or new disease appears.

A multidisciplinary team reviews scans, the cancer diagnosis, liver reserve and general fitness. Ablation can treat selected small liver tumours, sometimes when resection would be unsuitable, or support a transplant pathway. Selected metastases require consideration of the original cancer and disease outside the liver. Review alternatives with the oncology team before accepting a procedure.
Location matters as much as size. Nearby bile ducts or bowel can be injured by heat. Blood flow in major vessels may cool tissue and make complete treatment harder. These factors may favour a different ablation method, protective measures, surgery or another strategy.
Assessment includes imaging and blood tests for liver function, kidney function and clotting. Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, infections, previous biliary procedures, contrast reactions and implants. Follow individual instructions for medication and fasting; do not make changes independently.
Under the planned anaesthesia or sedation, the specialist guides the probe into the tumour and applies radiofrequency energy. The intended treatment zone includes the tumour and an appropriate surrounding margin where feasible. Positioning and imaging are checked during the procedure. Some cases require more than one probe placement or treatment session.
Afterwards, staff monitor pain, vital signs and signs of bleeding. Discharge depends on recovery and the clinical plan. Soreness, fatigue, mild fever or flu-like symptoms can occur. Resume activities and travel according to the team's advice, particularly after anaesthesia.
Possible complications include bleeding, liver infection or abscess, bile duct damage or leakage, injury to nearby organs and worsening liver function. Incomplete treatment and local recurrence are also possible. Increasing abdominal pain, persistent or worsening fever, faintness, jaundice or breathing problems need prompt medical assessment.
Contrast CT or MRI helps assess whether viable tumour remains. Later surveillance looks for recurrence or new lesions and may lead to additional treatment. Obtain the procedure report and imaging schedule, and arrange local liver and cancer care before returning home.
Costs vary with planning, anaesthesia, the number and complexity of targets, hospital observation, imaging and management of complications. Clarify which reviews and scans are included.
No. Both use heat, but generate it with different forms of energy.
No. Size, position, liver function and the wider disease pattern influence suitability.
No. Imaging and ongoing cancer assessment remain essential.
