A cardiac electrophysiology study, or EPS, investigates the heart's electrical signals using electrode catheters placed inside the heart through blood vessels. This invasive intracardiac examination helps a rhythm specialist assess selected suspected or established arrhythmias and plan further care. The team can use controlled electrical pacing to investigate how an abnormal rhythm starts and behaves. An EPS is different from a standard ECG or an external heart monitor, so the referral should specify which test is intended.
Before arranging an EPS abroad, send previous ECGs, monitoring reports, relevant cardiac investigations and a current medication list. Ask why an invasive study is recommended and whether the plan is diagnostic only or includes possible ablation. Ablation is a treatment, not an automatic part of every EPS. Confirm consent, preparation, sedation or anaesthesia, expected observation and follow-up arrangements with the cardiology team. Recovery and readiness for travel depend on your circumstances and any treatment performed.

An EPS can help clarify the mechanism or origin of an abnormal heart rhythm when further detail is needed. Selected patients may be assessed after palpitations, fainting or documented arrhythmia, or as part of treatment planning. The cardiologist considers the history, ECG and other investigations first. An invasive study is not necessary for everyone with palpitations.
In a specialist laboratory, the team introduces electrode catheters through a blood vessel, commonly at the groin, and guides them into the heart. Local anaesthetic is used at the access site; sedation or anaesthesia is planned individually. The catheters record electrical signals, and controlled pacing may provoke the rhythm being investigated. Tell staff about discomfort, dizziness or breathlessness. Monitoring and treatment are available if the rhythm needs to be stopped.
Obtain the team's written fasting and medication instructions. Give a complete medication list, including rhythm medicines and blood thinners, and report allergies, pregnancy or possible pregnancy. Do not stop treatment yourself: the cardiologist must decide any changes.
Discuss whether ablation could be appropriate during the same session. If proposed, its purpose, alternatives and additional risks should be explained and consent agreed. A diagnostic booking does not guarantee that an abnormal rhythm can be identified or treated.
Possible complications include bruising, bleeding or infection at the catheter entry site. Rare serious complications include blood-vessel or heart injury, bleeding around the heart, blood clots and stroke. Individual risk depends on the procedure and your health; adding ablation changes the risk discussion.
Afterwards, staff monitor your rhythm and puncture site. Get instructions about wound care, medicines, activity, driving and travel. Seek urgent care for persistent bleeding, severe chest pain, breathlessness or fainting. Confirm when it is appropriate to leave the area and whom to contact if problems arise.
Ask a cardiology specialist to review the referral and records before booking. Request an itemised quotation separating EPS, anaesthesia, any ablation, hospital observation and consultations. Arrange the procedure report, discharge summary, translation if needed and follow-up with your clinician at home.
No. This study records from catheters inside the heart. An ECG records through electrodes on the body surface.
No. Treatment depends on the agreed plan, findings and safety considerations.
The specialist will interpret this alongside previous tests and symptoms. Further monitoring or a different plan may be needed.
Ask the treating team for individual advice after it assesses your recovery and any additional treatment.
