Ultrasound uses sound waves to create live images of structures inside the body without ionizing radiation. Depending on the clinical question, it can examine abdominal organs, the thyroid, pelvic structures, soft tissues or blood vessels. Doppler techniques may be added to assess blood flow. An ultrasound appointment usually covers a specified area and purpose; it is not automatically a complete examination of every organ or a test that excludes every disease.
Before booking, send the referral or explain which body area and symptoms need assessment. Preparation varies: some abdominal examinations require changes to eating, while certain pelvic or urinary examinations require a full bladder. Follow the clinic's instructions for your exact scan rather than using a general preparation rule. Confirm whether the proposed examination is external or involves an internal probe, what the quotation includes and how you will receive the report. Previous images, laboratory results and clinical history can help the specialist interpret the findings.

The requested area and clinical question determine the ultrasound protocol. Abdominal imaging may assess the liver, gallbladder, kidneys or other specified structures as part of a gastroenterology assessment. Thyroid ultrasound examines the gland's structure and nodules and may support an endocrinology consultation, but does not measure thyroid hormone function. Pelvic, vascular, breast and heart examinations have different protocols. Ask which organs and techniques are included.
For an external scan, a trained professional places gel on the skin and moves a handheld probe over the area. You may be asked to change position or briefly hold your breath. Pressure can cause discomfort over a tender area; tell the examiner if this happens.
For some pelvic or prostate questions, an internal vaginal or rectal probe may provide additional detail. The professional should explain the proposed route, its purpose and alternatives before seeking your consent. An internal examination is not an automatic part of every ultrasound. You can ask for a chaperone, raise concerns and ask to stop.
Some upper abdominal scans require fasting to improve the examination, while certain scans through the lower abdomen require bladder filling. Other examinations need little preparation. Obtain written instructions for your exact appointment, including food, drink and whether to empty your bladder. Do not assume the same rules apply to an internal scan.
If you have diabetes, fluid restrictions or medicines that make preparation difficult, contact the department for a suitable plan. Do not alter treatment independently. Bring earlier reports and wear clothing that allows access to the area being examined.
Ultrasound does not use X-rays, but appropriate equipment, trained staff and a medical purpose remain important. Image quality depends on the examination, technique and access to the structure. Bowel gas, bone and tissue depth can limit the view. A normal result cannot exclude every possible cause of symptoms, and some findings require laboratory tests, another imaging method or biopsy.
Ask whether the price covers one area, Doppler assessment, a specialist consultation and image access. Confirm who will interpret and explain the findings and when the written report will be ready; report delivery and scan duration are separate arrangements.
No. Preparation depends on the examination. Use the department's specific instructions.
No. The route depends on the clinical question and your informed consent.
A standard appointment targets a defined area. Additional organs or specialist studies may require another protocol and booking.
