Thyroid imaging can mean different examinations, so the requested method should be confirmed before booking. Ultrasound uses sound waves to show the gland's structure, including the size and appearance of nodules. A radionuclide thyroid scan uses a radioactive tracer and a gamma camera to show its distribution within the gland, providing information about function. An uptake measurement may also be requested. These examinations answer different questions and are not automatically offered as a combined package.
The clinician chooses tests using symptoms, examination findings, blood results such as TSH, and previous investigations. Imaging alone does not establish the nature of every thyroid nodule; follow-up or a needle biopsy may be appropriate in selected cases. Share your referral, medication list and previous reports when arranging care. If a nuclear medicine examination is planned, contact the department in advance about pregnancy, breastfeeding, iodine exposure and any preparation instructions.

The term thyroid imaging does not identify a single procedure. Ask whether the referral requests ultrasound, radionuclide scanning, an uptake measurement or more than one test. The reason for the examination should be clear so the appointment and preparation match the clinical question.
Ultrasound examines the gland's structure using sound waves, without ionising radiation. It can describe nodules, assess their size and appearance, and support comparison with previous images. During the examination, gel and a small probe are used on the neck. Tell the team if extending your neck is difficult.
A nuclear medicine scan shows how a tracer is distributed within thyroid tissue. It may help investigate an overactive thyroid or whether a nodule is functioning autonomously. It is not required for every nodule. An uptake test measures how much tracer the gland takes up; confirm whether it is part of the request.
Ultrasound usually requires little preparation. For a radionuclide examination, send a complete medicine and supplement list and mention recent imaging with iodine-containing contrast. Iodine exposure and some medicines can affect results. Follow the department's specific instructions about meals, supplements or medicine changes; do not stop prescribed treatment yourself.
Tell nuclear medicine staff before the appointment if you are pregnant, might be pregnant or are breastfeeding. Thyroid radionuclide scans are generally avoided during pregnancy. Breastfeeding arrangements depend on the tracer and may require postponement or specific interruption instructions. Obtain advice for your actual examination before attending.
Images are interpreted alongside symptoms and blood tests, including TSH where appropriate. Neither a normal TSH result nor imaging alone rules out every significant nodule. The clinician may recommend observation, further assessment or biopsy according to the findings. An endocrinology consultation can help connect the report with the next step.
For nuclear medicine, distinguish tracer administration, waiting time, imaging and any return visit from report turnaround. Ask when the report and images will be available. Request an itemised quotation identifying the modality, tracer or uptake measurements if planned, consultation, report and any separately arranged biopsy.
It shows structure rather than hormone output. Blood tests and, when indicated, nuclear medicine provide different functional information.
No. The decision depends on ultrasound features, size, clinical history and other findings. A biopsy is a separate procedure, not an automatic part of imaging.
Only if the clinician requests both and the service arranges them. Confirm the examination names and schedule before making travel plans.
