A radiologist interprets medical images and explains what they show in relation to the reason for an examination. A consultation can help clarify an unfamiliar report, discuss an uncertain finding or compare earlier and newer studies. The important questions are not simply whether an image looks abnormal, but whether a finding could explain symptoms and what further information would change the next clinical decision.
Patients may seek another interpretation before treatment abroad or when records from different hospitals need to be brought together. Send the actual image files, reports, dates and a concise clinical history; a photographed report alone may not provide enough information. Confirm whether the appointment includes image review, a patient discussion and a written opinion, and whether the specialist covers the relevant body area. The review may recommend comparison, observation or further assessment, but it cannot promise a definitive diagnosis from every scan. Treatment decisions require coordination with the clinician responsible for care.

Radiologists assess images in the context of the clinical question. Tell the specialist why the examination was requested, what symptoms are present and whether an operation or treatment occurred between studies. Relevant background helps distinguish a potentially important finding from one that may be incidental.
A review of existing images is different from booking a new scan. Before travelling, establish whether the service provides a second interpretation, a discussion of the report or a fresh examination. These steps may have different requirements and charges.
A report usually records the examination technique, comparisons, findings and an impression. The impression summarises the main observations and may suggest possible explanations or further action. Words expressing uncertainty do not automatically establish a serious disease.
Some findings require correlation with symptoms or laboratory results; others may be incidental and cause no harm. A radiologist may recommend prior-image comparison, follow-up imaging or another investigation. Ask which finding matters to your situation and which question remains unresolved.
Provide the complete image files using the clinic's accepted transfer method, not only screenshots. Send earlier examinations of the same region where available, with their dates and reports. Comparing studies from different facilities can help determine whether a finding is new or has changed.
Keep the original report even when requesting another opinion. If conclusions differ, ask how the interpretations compare and what information could resolve the difference. The treating clinician should receive the written review rather than relying on a brief verbal summary.
Reviewing an existing study does not itself expose you to radiation. New examinations have method-specific considerations: x-ray and CT use ionising radiation, whereas MRI does not. The appropriate test balances the clinical benefit against its risks and limitations.
Before MRI or contrast administration, report implants, possible pregnancy, kidney disease and previous contrast reactions. MRI device safety requires identification of the exact implant; contrast is not required for every examination. Follow the team's individual preparation instructions and do not alter prescribed medicines independently.
Confirm the number of studies covered, the language and timing of the written opinion, and whether follow-up questions are included. Additional imaging is not automatically part of the review fee. If images inform cancer treatment, an oncologist consultation can place the interpretation within the wider care plan.
Not always. The specialist may need the original images.
Only when justified by the remaining clinical question.
No. Its meaning depends on the finding and clinical context.
