3D CT uses computed tomography images to build three-dimensional views of a selected body area. The scanner collects cross-sectional images using X-rays, and computer processing displays structures from different angles. These reconstructions can help doctors understand complex fractures, bone anatomy or blood vessels and plan appropriate treatment. The useful information depends on the body region, scanning protocol and clinical question; a three-dimensional picture does not replace review of the original images.
Patients considering assessment abroad may need detailed imaging for surgical planning or a specialist review of an existing diagnosis. Before arranging another scan, ask whether previous images are sufficient and whether the receiving team needs specific reconstructions. Contrast is required for some examinations, rather than every 3D CT. A radiologist and the referring doctor decide whether the expected benefit justifies radiation exposure and how the result will affect care.

3D CT can clarify the relationship between structures that overlap on ordinary images. Depending on the examination, doctors may use it to assess a complex fracture, examine a bone abnormality or map blood vessels before treatment. It remains a reconstruction of CT data, rather than a separate test for every disease. Different problems require different imaging protocols.
Send the referral, relevant medical history and previous images before travelling. Confirm the region to be scanned, whether contrast is needed and what the specialist wants to learn. Other diagnostic examinations may answer a different question; the most appropriate option follows the clinical assessment.
Tell staff about possible pregnancy, kidney disease, previous reactions to contrast and current medicines. A kidney function test may be needed before intravenous contrast. Follow the department’s instructions about food, drink and medicines, because requirements differ. Do not stop prescribed treatment without guidance. Mention difficulty lying flat or keeping still so that assistance can be arranged.
You lie on a table that moves through a short, ring-shaped scanner. The radiographer communicates from another room and may ask you to hold your breath. If required, contrast is injected into a vein or given orally for particular investigations. Brief warmth or a metallic taste can accompany an injection.
Image acquisition is usually brief, but preparation, contrast administration and observation extend the visit. Ask for the appointment length separately from the reporting time. A radiologist reviews the images and prepares a report. Obtain the original image files as well as any requested 3D views, so the treating team can review them.
CT involves ionising radiation. The examination should have a clear clinical purpose, with the protocol adapted to the patient. Contrast can cause an allergic reaction or leak around the injection site. Report pain, swelling or feeling unwell immediately; difficulty breathing requires urgent assistance. The price depends on the scanned region, contrast, reconstruction work and specialist interpretation.
No. CT uses X-rays; MRI uses a magnetic field and answers different questions.
Sometimes existing CT data are suitable. The radiology team must check their quality and protocol.
Image acquisition and reporting are separate. Agree how and when the referring doctor will explain the findings.
