Breast cancer includes diseases that differ in where they begin, how far they have spread and their biological features. Many start in the breast ducts or lobules. It can occur in women and men. An abnormal scan or a breast lump does not by itself establish cancer; imaging and, when indicated, biopsy help determine the cause. The pathology report distinguishes the tissue type and whether disease is in situ or invasive.
Treatment planning combines the extent of disease with tumor grade and biomarkers, including estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and HER2. These findings can influence which treatments are appropriate, so people with similar-sized tumors may receive different plans. Options include local treatment such as surgery or radiotherapy and systemic medicines selected for the disease. Discuss expected benefits, adverse effects, personal priorities and follow-up with the specialist team. A clear diagnosis and an individual plan are more useful than a standard package of tests or procedures.

A new breast or underarm lump, nipple change or discharge, skin dimpling, or a persistent change in breast shape should be assessed. Many changes are benign, but a recent normal mammogram does not remove the need to investigate a new symptom. Early breast cancer may cause no symptoms.
Assessment may include examination, diagnostic mammography and ultrasound. MRI is useful in selected circumstances. A biopsy provides tissue for a pathologist to examine and confirm the diagnosis. The tests are chosen for the clinical findings; MRI or whole-body scanning is not automatically needed for everyone.
Staging considers the tumor, regional lymph nodes and distant spread. Breast cancer assessment also uses grade and biomarkers; size alone cannot provide the full picture. The team should explain whether findings describe in situ disease, invasive cancer or cancer that has spread beyond the breast.
Estrogen receptor, or ER, progesterone receptor, or PR, and HER2 results help guide treatment. Additional molecular or gene-expression tests may be appropriate for selected cases when they could change a decision. A biomarker result does not guarantee response, and its interpretation belongs within the complete clinical assessment.
Surgery may involve breast-conserving treatment or mastectomy, with lymph node assessment when indicated. Radiotherapy may be part of the local treatment plan. The order of treatment varies; some people receive medicines before an operation.
Systemic options may include chemotherapy, endocrine therapy for hormone-sensitive disease, targeted medicines or immunotherapy in particular settings. Not everyone needs each option. Treatment for metastatic disease follows a different strategy from treatment for disease confined to the breast and regional nodes.
Ask about the aims of treatment, reconstruction where relevant, possible effects on fertility or menopause, and support with side effects. For a second opinion, prepare pathology and biomarker reports, imaging files and treatment records. Clarify who will coordinate the plan through the oncology team and how new symptoms should be reported.
No. Many lumps are benign, but a new or changing lump needs assessment.
No. The decision depends on stage, biology, expected benefit, general health and the treatment setting.
No. Breast-conserving treatment may be suitable for selected patients. The team compares appropriate options.
No. Extent of disease, previous therapy, health, detailed test findings and personal priorities also influence the plan.
