Basal cell carcinoma, also called basalioma, is a common skin cancer that develops from cells in the epidermis. It usually grows slowly and rarely spreads to distant parts of the body, but it can invade and damage nearby tissue. A persistent shiny lump, a scaly patch or a sore that repeatedly crusts, bleeds or fails to heal should be assessed by a dermatologist. Appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis; examination of a tissue sample helps establish the type of lesion.
Treatment is chosen according to the tumor's location, size, microscopic features, previous treatment and the person's health. Surgical removal is common, while Mohs surgery or other approaches may be appropriate in selected circumstances. When arranging a second opinion or care abroad, prepare the pathology report and details of previous procedures. Ask how the team will assess surgical margins, manage the wound and organize follow-up after you return home.

A dermatologist examines the lesion and the rest of the skin, reviews its history and arranges a biopsy when needed. The pathologist's report identifies basal cell carcinoma and features relevant to treatment. If tissue has already been sampled, ask whether the original slides or tissue blocks are needed for review.
CT, MRI and other staging investigations are not routine for every small basal cell carcinoma. The specialist may request imaging if examination suggests deeper involvement or other concerning features. Photographs can help document change, but cannot replace assessment and tissue diagnosis.
Standard excision removes the tumor with a surrounding margin; the removed tissue is examined for remaining cancer at the edges. Mohs micrographic surgery checks tissue margins during a staged removal process. It may be useful for recurrent tumors, selected high-risk lesions or sites where preserving healthy tissue is particularly important, such as around the nose or eyes.
Selected superficial, low-risk lesions may be treated with topical medicines or photodynamic therapy. Radiotherapy is another option in appropriate circumstances, including when surgery is unsuitable. Locally advanced or rare metastatic disease requires specialist review; targeted medicines or immunotherapy may be considered according to the clinical situation and previous treatment.
For a consultation through the oncology care pathway, provide the biopsy report, lesion location and size, medication list and previous treatment records. Ask whether wound closure, a skin graft or another reconstructive procedure may be needed. A written estimate should distinguish consultation, pathology, treatment and follow-up costs.
Before travel, clarify when results will be available and who will manage dressings, stitches and later reviews. After treatment, skin examinations remain important because the original tumor can recur and another skin cancer can develop. Discuss sun protection and self-examination with the dermatologist.
No. Untreated tumors can grow into surrounding structures. A persistent or changing skin lesion should be evaluated even when it is painless.
No. The decision depends on the tumor's risk features and location. Standard excision and other approaches remain appropriate for selected patients.
Only some lesions are suitable for prescribed topical treatment. A clinician must confirm the diagnosis and explain the limitations and need for review.
The schedule depends on the tumor and treatment. Obtain a written plan and seek advice about new growth, bleeding or a change at the treated site.
