Scintigraphy is a nuclear medicine examination that uses a radiopharmaceutical to investigate a particular organ or body process. A gamma camera records radiation emitted by the tracer and a computer produces images. Depending on the referral, the examination may assess bone activity, thyroid function, kidney drainage or blood supply to the heart. The appropriate tracer and imaging method depend on the clinical question; scintigraphy is not a single test that detects every cancer or excludes all disease.
Before booking, confirm the exact examination name and whether planar images, SPECT or SPECT/CT are planned. Preparation, waiting periods and the number of imaging sessions vary between protocols. The department should provide instructions about food, medicines, hydration and precautions after the scan. Send your referral and previous results for review, and ask which services the quoted price covers. The time spent taking images is different from the total visit and the time needed to prepare the specialist report.

The examination addresses a defined clinical question. Bone scintigraphy may investigate unexplained bone symptoms or suspected spread to bone in selected cancers. Thyroid imaging examines the gland's activity and distribution of functioning tissue. Renal scintigraphy can assess kidney function and urine drainage. Myocardial perfusion imaging evaluates blood supply to heart muscle, sometimes with exercise or a medicine used for stress testing. Your referral determines the relevant protocol.
Planar scintigraphy produces projection images, generally in two dimensions. In SPECT, a gamma camera rotates around the body to reconstruct three-dimensional images. SPECT/CT combines this information with CT images that help locate findings anatomically. These options are not interchangeable: additional imaging is chosen when it can answer the clinical question. A CT component adds X-ray exposure; any CT contrast is a separate, conditional part of the protocol.
The radiopharmaceutical is selected for the organ and purpose of the examination. It is commonly injected, although some investigations use an oral or inhaled tracer. Images may be recorded immediately, after an uptake interval or in several stages. Obtain the appointment schedule before arranging transport or travel.
Food, fluid and medicine instructions are examination-specific. Give the department a medication list and details of recent investigations; iodine-containing contrast can affect some thyroid tests. Do not change prescribed treatment independently. Report difficulties lying still, moving between positions or completing a planned exercise test.
The tracer causes ionizing radiation exposure. Tell the department before the appointment about possible pregnancy or breastfeeding so that suitability and tracer-specific precautions can be assessed. Follow the instructions provided about close contact, feeding and fluids.
Increased bone tracer uptake can occur with a fracture, arthritis or infection as well as cancer. A specialist interprets the pattern alongside your history and other tests. Uncertain findings may require targeted imaging or biopsy.
Request a written quotation specifying the organ, tracer, imaging method, report and image access. Ask whether consultations or additional imaging are included, and confirm the report language and expected delivery separately from the appointment length.
No. Detection depends on the disease and protocol. A suspicious scan alone does not establish the tissue diagnosis.
No. Follow the preparation supplied for your exact examination, including any instructions about caffeine or medicines.
Yes. Some protocols need delayed images or separate sessions. Confirm the schedule with the department before booking travel.
