A biopsy removes a sample of cells or tissue for laboratory examination. It can help investigate a suspicious lump, an abnormal scan or changes in an organ, including cancer, inflammation and other conditions. The procedure may use a needle, an endoscope or surgery, depending on the target and the information needed. A referral for biopsy does not itself mean that cancer has been diagnosed.
When considering a clinic abroad, clarify both how the sample will be obtained and who will interpret it. Existing scan images, earlier pathology reports and, where available, previous slides or tissue blocks can help the receiving team decide whether another procedure is necessary. Ask whether the quotation includes imaging guidance, anaesthesia, laboratory examination and a consultation about the result. Specialist pathology review or additional tests may be useful in selected cases; they are not automatically required for every patient.

A biopsy provides material for laboratory assessment. Fine needle aspiration mainly collects cells or fluid; a core needle obtains pieces of tissue. An endoscopic or surgical biopsy may be appropriate for other sites. Ultrasound, CT or MRI can help guide a needle to a target that cannot be felt. The team chooses a method likely to provide enough useful material with acceptable risk.
Provide previous reports, scan images, medication and supplement lists, allergies and relevant medical conditions. Ask for instructions about eating, drinking and medicines: requirements depend on the site and anaesthetic. Do not stop blood thinning treatment independently. Sedation or general anaesthesia may require an escort and restrictions on driving.
Local anaesthetic can numb the entry area, although pressure or brief discomfort may remain. Some image guided needle procedures take less than an hour, but preparation and observation add time. An endoscopic or surgical biopsy may require a longer visit or admission. Confirm the timetable for the actual procedure before arranging travel.
A pathologist examines the sample. Additional stains, specialist review or selected molecular tests may help clarify the findings. Results may take days or longer when extra work is needed. Ask when the report will be discussed and whether further sampling could be necessary if the material is insufficient.
Follow written wound care, activity and contact instructions. Bleeding, infection and injury to nearby structures are possible; risks depend on the organ and technique. Seek prompt medical advice for persistent bleeding, worsening pain, fever or increasing swelling. The quotation should specify sampling, imaging, anaesthesia, observation and pathology, with any additional investigations itemised. A consultation in oncology can help interpret suspected tumour findings in context.
No. Samples also investigate benign changes, infection and inflammation.
Imaging can locate a lesion, but may not establish its cellular diagnosis. The specialist decides what evidence is needed.
Not necessarily. Staging may require imaging and other findings alongside pathology.
Not automatically. Send existing reports and ask whether review of earlier material can answer the question.
