Colon cancer treatment and diagnostics abroad

Colon cancer is a malignant tumor that develops from the lining of the colon, usually from a polyp. Symptoms depend on which part of the bowel the tumor is in, and surgery is the main treatment.

Symptoms by location

• right side of the colon — weakness and iron-deficiency anaemia from hidden bleeding, dull abdominal pain;
• left side and sigmoid colon — a change in bowel habits, alternating constipation and diarrhoea, blood in the stool, bloating;

Unexplained weight loss and poor appetite are also possible, and in advanced cases bowel obstruction.

Diagnosis

• colonoscopy with biopsy;
• chest and abdominal CT — staging;
• the CEA tumor marker and molecular tumor tests;
• PET-CT — in unclear cases.

• Surgery — hemicolectomy or sigmoid resection with lymph nodes, often laparoscopic or robotic.
• Chemotherapy — after surgery when lymph nodes are involved, or for metastases.
• Targeted therapy and immunotherapy — according to the tumor's molecular profile.
• Removal or ablation of metastases in the liver or lungs.
