Comprehensive breast cancer assessment investigates a breast change and, if cancer is confirmed, provides information needed to plan treatment. It may be arranged for a lump, skin or nipple changes, unusual discharge or an abnormal screening mammogram. The specialist brings together examination, imaging and tissue analysis when indicated. The tests depend on age, symptoms and earlier findings; not everyone needs every available investigation. Referral to a breast clinic does not itself mean that cancer has been found.
Assessment abroad may be considered for clarification of an uncertain result, review of a previous biopsy or consultation with a team experienced in breast tumours. Send earlier images and reports, plus details of previous surgery and treatment, before travelling. Ask which investigations are needed now, when the results will be available and who will explain the next steps. Have new breast changes assessed locally without postponing the first medical review until an overseas appointment.

The clinician asks about symptoms, family history, previous surgery and medicines before examining the breast and, when appropriate, the armpit. Examination, breast imaging and biopsy when needed form a triple assessment. These methods answer different questions; an abnormal image alone does not provide a complete description of a tumour.
Mammography uses x-rays, while ultrasound uses sound waves. Mammography briefly compresses the breast between plates and can be uncomfortable. Younger patients often have ultrasound first, but the choice depends on the clinical situation. Breast MRI is sometimes used to assess the extent of a confirmed cancer or clarify uncertain findings. It does not automatically replace the other tests.
If a biopsy is needed, the specialist chooses the sampling method and suitable ultrasound, mammographic or MRI guidance. A needle biopsy usually involves local anaesthetic and removal of tissue for laboratory examination. The pathologist identifies the nature of the change. Confirmed cancer is assessed for its type and relevant features, including ER, PR and HER2. Further staging investigations are selected according to the findings rather than prescribed as the same package for everyone.
Bring earlier images and reports, a medication list and allergy information. Mention possible pregnancy and, before MRI, implants or difficulty with enclosed spaces. Discuss medicines affecting blood clotting before a biopsy; do not stop prescribed treatment yourself. Follow the department’s instructions for the particular procedure.
A clinic visit involving several investigations can take a few hours; another appointment is sometimes needed. Some findings can be discussed that day, but biopsy and additional laboratory testing take longer. Results may take one to two weeks or more; confirm the laboratory’s schedule. After a biopsy, tenderness and bruising can occur. Follow advice on the dressing and physical activity. Persistent bleeding, increasing swelling, redness or heat in the breast require medical advice.
Check separate charges for consultation, mammography, ultrasound, any indicated MRI, biopsy, pathology and additional tests. Ask whether existing tissue can be reviewed and arrange a discussion of the combined results. Request a written plan for your doctor at home. Further information is available in the oncology section.
No. Sampling helps establish whether a suspicious change is malignant or benign.
No. This marker is not reliable enough to diagnose breast cancer on its own.
No. Tissue examination and any further laboratory tests follow the sampling procedure.
