Comprehensive cancer diagnosis brings together specialist assessment, imaging and laboratory examination to investigate suspected cancer or clarify an existing diagnosis. The aim is to establish what a finding represents and, when cancer is confirmed, obtain information about its type and extent that can guide treatment. The tests depend on symptoms, the organ involved and previous results. A scan, blood test or commercial screening package cannot provide every answer on its own.
Patients may consider assessment abroad for a second opinion, review of an uncertain diagnosis or access to expertise relevant to an unusual tumour. Before travelling, send the clinic your reports, original scan images and details of any previous biopsy or treatment. Ask which investigations could change the next decision and when the final explanation will be available. The value of the visit depends on coordinated interpretation and a clear follow-up plan, rather than the number of tests performed.

The specialist first reviews symptoms, medical history, examination findings and earlier results. Diagnostic investigations address a specific concern; screening is testing people without symptoms according to their risk. Routine whole-body CT screening is not an appropriate substitute for a tailored diagnostic pathway. Tests may also identify a non-cancerous explanation for the findings.
Ultrasound, CT or MRI can locate abnormalities and assess their relationship to surrounding structures. When appropriate, tissue sampling and examination by a pathologist establish the nature of an abnormality. The method depends on its location and whether sampling is safe. Selected tumour biomarkers provide additional information relevant to treatment; the required tests differ between cancers. PET-CT has particular diagnostic and staging uses and is not a compulsory test for every patient.
Provide previous imaging, pathology reports, treatment summaries and a medication list before the appointment. Ask whether existing tissue can be reviewed and what material the laboratory needs. Tell the team about possible pregnancy, contrast allergies and conditions that may affect preparation. Follow the instructions for each planned procedure, including any fasting requirements. Discuss benefits, risks, anaesthesia and recovery with the team before agreeing to an invasive test.
There is no fixed duration for the whole assessment. A PET-CT scan, if indicated, commonly takes 30–45 minutes, with around two hours in the department. This is separate from consultation, other procedures and laboratory processing. Results may take days to weeks; additional tissue or molecular studies can extend the schedule. Ask who will explain the combined findings and arrange the next step.
Request an itemised estimate covering consultations, imaging, contrast, tissue sampling, anaesthesia when needed, pathology, molecular tests and results review. Confirm which services are included and which depend on earlier findings. Agree how reports will reach your doctor at home. Discuss urgency with the treating team before delaying care for travel. Related information is available in the oncology section.
No. The suspected cancer, clinical findings and existing evidence determine which tests are useful.
No. Blood findings must be interpreted with the clinical assessment and other appropriate investigations.
Not automatically. Ask whether the existing sample is suitable for review or whether further material is needed.
