A traumatic hip dislocation occurs when the head of the thighbone is forced out of its socket, often during a major injury. It is a medical emergency: severe hip pain, inability to move or bear weight, an abnormal leg position or numbness after trauma require immediate local assessment. Call emergency services and do not attempt to straighten the leg or put the joint back yourself. Arranging treatment abroad must not delay emergency care.
Developmental dysplasia of the hip is a different condition, involving abnormal development and stability of the joint in babies and children. Its assessment and treatment depend on age and the hip findings. After urgent treatment of an injury, or for a planned dysplasia opinion, an orthopedic specialist can review imaging, previous procedures and remaining problems. The aim is to clarify the diagnosis, protect joint function and organize appropriate follow-up, without assuming that every patient needs the same operation.

Emergency teams assess the injury alongside possible fractures and other trauma. Examination includes nerve function and circulation in the affected limb. X-rays establish the joint position; CT can clarify associated fractures or fragments, including after reduction. The sequence of investigations and treatment is determined by the emergency team and must not be delayed for a remote opinion.
Reduction means restoring the femoral head to the socket. Clinicians perform it with appropriate pain control, sedation or anesthesia. Surgery may be needed if the joint cannot be reduced, tissue or fragments block its return, or associated fractures or instability require treatment. Successful reduction does not by itself exclude other damage.
The treating team specifies permitted weight bearing, movement precautions and any walking aids. Rehabilitation should follow these instructions rather than a general online exercise schedule. New severe pain, numbness, weakness or a cold, pale foot requires urgent reassessment; suspected redislocation also needs emergency care.
Follow-up may address recurrent instability, nerve injury, post-traumatic arthritis and osteonecrosis. Osteonecrosis means bone damage associated with an impaired blood supply to the femoral head and can become apparent later. Prompt treatment matters, but it cannot guarantee that every complication will be prevented. Recovery and return to work or sport depend on the injury and subsequent findings.
In developmental dysplasia, the socket and its relationship with the femoral head have not developed normally. The hip may be unstable, partly displaced or fully dislocated. Babies may not show pain. Examination and age-appropriate imaging, commonly ultrasound in young babies and X-rays in older children, guide pediatric orthopedic care.
Selected infants may need a professionally fitted harness or brace with regular checks. Other children need reduction, casting or surgery according to age, joint development and previous treatment. Parents need specific care instructions and should not adjust the harness independently. Continuing follow-up matters even when the initial position improves.
Provide dated images, reduction or operation notes and current mobility restrictions. Ask which problems remain, whether further intervention is needed and who will coordinate follow-up locally. Travel requires discussion with the treating team; a consultation booking does not establish fitness to travel.
No. Suspected traumatic hip dislocation needs immediate local emergency care.
No. Attempted reduction can cause additional injury and requires trained clinicians.
No. Their causes, assessment and treatment pathways differ.
No. The decision depends on reduction, associated injuries, stability and the specific diagnosis.
