Cell-based treatments offered for knee damage may involve preparations from bone marrow or fat, or other cell products. They are not all the same, and the term “stem cell therapy” does not define a standard procedure. Research is examining whether certain preparations improve pain and function, but reliable regeneration of damaged knee cartilage has not been established. A cell injection cannot be assumed to repair a torn ligament or meniscus or to replace treatment of advanced arthritis.
People consider assessment abroad to discuss a specific product, obtain an independent orthopaedic opinion or explore an appropriately supervised study. The consultation should establish what is causing the knee symptoms and compare established alternatives. Ask for evidence concerning the exact preparation and your diagnosis, how it is processed and how outcomes and complications will be monitored. An improvement in pain does not by itself demonstrate new cartilage growth or justify a promise of avoiding future surgery.

Knee pain may reflect osteoarthritis, a focal cartilage defect, a meniscal or ligament injury, inflammation or another condition. Examination and appropriate imaging help distinguish these problems. Evidence for one diagnosis cannot automatically be applied to another. Exercise-based rehabilitation, weight management when relevant, medicines and indicated surgery remain part of the discussion. Severe arthritis may require assessment for knee replacement.
Bone marrow concentrate, preparations from fat and culture-expanded cells differ in composition and processing. Bone marrow concentrate is not a purified stem cell product. Platelet-rich plasma is a blood platelet preparation and is not the same as stem cell therapy. Ask the team to identify the source, processing method, product status and evidence for your condition. Surgical implantation of cultured cartilage cells for selected defects is a separate treatment.
Bring previous scans, operation records and information about earlier injections. Clinicians review infection risk, bleeding disorders, medicines and other health conditions. Eligibility and preparation depend on the exact product or study. Do not stop prescribed medicines without instructions.
For some autologous preparations, marrow or fat is collected under local anaesthesia, processed and injected into the knee, sometimes with imaging guidance. Other products use different arrangements. Collection and injection are distinct steps with their own risks. An arthroscopic operation is not automatically included, and study participation requires a separate eligibility assessment.
Temporary soreness, swelling or discomfort at the collection site may occur. Activity and rehabilitation instructions should match the underlying knee problem and procedure. Infection, bleeding, inflammatory reactions and lack of benefit are possible; risks also depend on processing and the product used. A hot swollen knee, fever, worsening pain or inability to bear weight requires prompt assessment.
Follow-up should measure pain, function and adverse effects, rather than assuming an injection has rebuilt cartilage. Symptoms can improve without structural regeneration. Evidence remains insufficient to promise durable repair or freedom from later surgery.
Obtain an independent opinion and compare the proposed intervention with established care. Costs may include imaging, tissue collection, processing, injection, rehabilitation and repeat reviews. Clarify emergency support and responsibility for complications after returning home.
No. Reliable restoration of damaged cartilage cannot be promised.
No. Collection, processing and injection still carry risks.
No. PRP concentrates platelets and differs from cell-based preparations.
