A meniscus tear affects one of the two fibrocartilage cushions between the thighbone and shinbone. A tear can follow a twisting injury or develop gradually as the tissue changes with age. Traumatic and degenerative tears need different consideration, particularly when osteoarthritis or another knee injury is present. Pain, swelling, catching or difficulty straightening the knee may occur, but these symptoms do not identify the cause on their own.
Assessment combines the injury history, examination, everyday limitations and imaging when appropriate. A finding on MRI does not automatically justify surgery. Many patients begin with adapted activity, exercise-based rehabilitation and suitable pain treatment. Some displaced or repairable injuries need earlier surgical review. Bring previous images, reports and treatment details to an orthopaedic consultation. A truly locked knee, serious injury or inability to bear weight needs prompt local assessment rather than waiting for an overseas appointment.

The medial and lateral menisci help distribute load and support knee stability. Tears differ in pattern, location, tissue quality and whether a fragment is displaced. An acute sports injury may also damage a ligament or other joint structures. A degenerative tear can coexist with osteoarthritis and may not explain all the pain.
The clinician checks movement, swelling, joint-line tenderness and stability, then considers the history and symptoms together. MRI is useful for assessing an acute meniscal injury and related soft tissues. X-rays do not show the tear itself, but can reveal arthritis or other bone findings. Which images are needed depends on the clinical question.
A knee that is physically stuck and cannot straighten differs from brief clicking or pain-limited movement. It needs prompt assessment for a displaced tear or another cause. Severe pain after injury, inability to bear weight or a hot swollen knee with illness also warrants urgent local advice. Do not force the joint to unlock.
Many tears can be managed initially without an operation. An individual plan may include temporary activity changes, suitable pain relief and exercises to restore strength and movement. Degenerative tears, especially with osteoarthritis, commonly begin with non-operative care. Ask which symptoms are likely to improve and when progress should be reviewed.
Surgery may be considered for selected displaced tears, a repairable acute injury or persistent problems after appropriate care. Repair preserves tissue when the tear's characteristics allow it. Partial meniscectomy removes selected damaged tissue when repair is unsuitable. These procedures have different aims and rehabilitation requirements; one is not automatically appropriate for every tear. Ask why the recommended approach fits the whole knee.
Rehabilitation should match the injury and any procedure performed. Restrictions on weight bearing, knee movement and sport vary. After surgery, complications can include infection, blood clots or persistent symptoms. Neither rapid recovery nor full return to a particular sport can be guaranteed.
Send original images and describe work, walking and sporting goals. Clarify the proposed procedure, alternatives, estimate and who will supervise rehabilitation at home. Obtain written activity guidance and a contact for unexpected deterioration.
No. Symptoms, examination, other knee changes and response to care guide the decision.
No. Their context, healing potential and appropriate treatment can differ.
No. Repair aims to preserve and heal tissue; trimming removes selected damaged tissue.
Seek prompt local assessment. A mechanical block needs evaluation before making travel plans.
