Arthroscopy is a surgical examination of the inside of a joint through small incisions. A camera helps the surgeon assess structures such as cartilage, ligaments or the joint lining; selected problems can also be treated during the procedure. It may be considered for particular injuries, loose fragments or unresolved mechanical symptoms after clinical assessment and appropriate imaging. It is not a routine replacement for MRI or a universal treatment for joint pain.
An orthopaedic opinion abroad may help when the diagnosis remains uncertain or the choice between rehabilitation, arthroscopic repair and other surgery needs review. Send previous images, reports, details of earlier treatment and your work or sport goals before arranging travel. Ask what the surgeon expects to find, which treatment is proposed and how it could change your recovery plan. The consultation should also address alternatives, realistic limitations and rehabilitation after returning home, because small skin incisions do not necessarily mean a short recovery.

The decision depends on the joint, examination and imaging findings. Examples include selected meniscal or ligament injuries, loose joint fragments and some inflammatory lining problems. Discuss whether direct inspection would answer an unresolved question or allow useful treatment. Routine arthroscopic washout or debridement for knee osteoarthritis alone is not recommended; exercise, rehabilitation and other appropriate care should be considered.
Give the team your medical history, allergies, medicines and supplements, including anticoagulants and diabetes treatment. Report possible pregnancy. A preoperative assessment determines which checks and type of anaesthesia are needed. Obtain individual fasting and medication instructions; do not stop prescribed treatment yourself. Agree in advance which repairs or other procedures may be performed if a problem is found, and what alternatives exist.
The surgeon introduces an arthroscope through a small incision and views the joint on a screen. Additional incisions allow instruments to reach the area being examined or treated. Anaesthesia may be general, regional or local according to the joint and procedure. The incisions are closed and dressed afterwards.
How long arthroscopy takes depends on the joint and the work planned. Assessment, anaesthesia and recovery add time. Many patients leave the same day, while some need an overnight stay. Arrange the required escort and clarify when the operative findings or any tissue results will be discussed.
Follow the specific plan for wound care, movement and rehabilitation. Restrictions differ after inspection, removal of a loose fragment or tissue repair. Crutches, a brace or limits on weight-bearing may be needed. Return to work, driving and sport depends on healing and the procedure, not just the size of the incisions.
Risks include infection, bleeding, clots, nerve injury, stiffness and anaesthetic complications; symptoms may persist. Fever, wound discharge, marked swelling or worsening pain need prompt assessment. Request an itemised quote for surgery, anaesthesia, hospital care, implants if used, pathology and physiotherapy. Ask which follow-up visits are included. Learn about related care in orthopaedics.
No. Inspection and treatment can sometimes be combined, within the agreed surgical plan.
No. Arthroscopy does not restore an arthritic joint to normal.
No. Repairs may need prolonged protection and rehabilitation before the surgeon clears sporting activity.
