ApiFix is an implanted system intended to correct selected adolescent idiopathic scoliosis curves without a conventional spinal fusion. A rod attached to the spine acts as an internal support and allows a degree of movement. It is designed for particular flexible curve patterns, so it is not an alternative for every type of scoliosis or every patient needing spinal surgery.
Selection requires specialist review of standing and bending X-rays, spinal alignment, skeletal maturity and general health. The discussion should compare observation, bracing and other surgical options where appropriate. ApiFix has specific evidence and regulatory limitations: its United States authorisation follows the humanitarian device pathway, which does not establish proven effectiveness for this use. Before seeking treatment abroad, agree postoperative rehabilitation, long-term imaging and a plan for implant problems or revision. Avoid assuming that surgery without fusion means complete correction, unrestricted sport or no future operations.

A spinal deformity specialist confirms adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and determines whether the curve pattern and flexibility meet the current device criteria. Standing images measure alignment; side-bending views show how much the curve can reduce. Skeletal maturity, bone quality and the shape of the spine in the side view also matter. One Cobb angle alone cannot establish suitability.
ApiFix uses a posterior approach and an adjustable rod anchored to vertebrae. It aims to correct and stabilise the curve while avoiding the deliberate fusion of the treated spinal segment. It is a different technique from vertebral body tethering. The surgeon should explain the proposed device configuration and the expected correction for the individual curve.
Preserving some movement is a treatment objective, not a promise of normal spinal function. Conventional fusion remains an established option for suitable surgical cases. Ask why the proposed approach is appropriate compared with that alternative and whether nonsurgical management remains reasonable.
The humanitarian authorisation in the United States is based on safety and probable benefit; it is not evidence that effectiveness has been demonstrated for the indicated use. Published patient series report correction as well as complications and repeat procedures. Results cannot be treated as a guarantee for an individual adolescent.
Potential problems include infection, pain, inadequate correction, loss of correction and implant loosening or breakage. Neurological injury and other surgical complications are possible. Revision, implant removal or conversion to fusion may be needed. Long-term surveillance is therefore important even after a satisfactory early result.
The team plans wound care, movement precautions and physiotherapy. Exercises and return to school or sport must follow the individual programme; generic online routines cannot replace it. Agree who will review follow-up X-rays and assess new pain or changes in the curve after returning home.
Request an itemised estimate for assessment, implant, surgery, rehabilitation and follow-up. Clarify arrangements for revision and access to implant records. Related care is covered in the site's orthopaedic materials.
No. Curve type, flexibility and other device criteria restrict eligibility.
No. Implant problems or changes in correction may require another operation.
