Whole-body MRI examines several areas of the body using an agreed imaging protocol. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves without ionising radiation. The name does not mean that every organ receives the same detailed assessment: coverage and imaging sequences depend on the clinical question. A doctor may request it to assess the extent of selected cancers or as part of surveillance for certain inherited conditions. If you have symptoms, the first step is to establish which investigation addresses them before choosing a package or clinic.
For people without symptoms or established risk factors, benefit from whole-body MRI as a general screening check has not been demonstrated. Incidental findings may lead to further investigations, and a normal report cannot exclude every disease. Before booking, confirm the scan coverage, contrast requirements, preparation and implant safety assessment. Compare equivalent packages: scanner time, report turnaround, medical consultation and access to images are separate considerations. The price depends on the agreed protocol, and additional targeted examinations may carry separate charges.

A referral should address a specific clinical question. In suspected myeloma, whole-body MRI may help assess bone marrow involvement. Specialists may also use it for staging selected cancers. For people with confirmed Li-Fraumeni syndrome, it can form part of a specialist surveillance programme. These uses differ from routine screening for someone at average risk. Discuss the indication and alternatives with your treating doctor; see our oncology information for related care.
The American College of Radiology considers evidence insufficient to recommend whole-body MRI screening for people without symptoms or significant risk factors. A survival benefit has not been established. Incidental abnormalities may be harmless but prompt additional testing, including false-positive results. The examination cannot detect every cancer. A normal report does not explain away persistent symptoms or replace recommended screening, targeted investigations or a biopsy when needed.
Tell the clinic about pregnancy, kidney disease, previous contrast reactions, surgery and implanted devices. Bring the exact model details and documentation for a pacemaker, neurostimulator or other implant. MRI eligibility depends on its safety labelling and the scanning conditions; having an implant is not automatically a prohibition. Remove metallic belongings and follow staff instructions. Body size and weight limits depend on the scanner, while suitability for a child requires an individual assessment.
Contrast is used when the chosen protocol requires it. If planned, the doctor assesses contraindications and whether kidney function testing is needed. Discuss claustrophobia or difficulty lying still before arrival. Hearing protection is provided during scanning; sedation, if needed, involves separate preparation. Obtain the clinic’s instructions about food and regular medicines. Our MRI guide explains the general examination process.
Request a personalised quote and a written list of inclusions. Agree on the report language, file delivery method and arrangements for a follow-up consultation. When travelling for care, allow time to discuss the findings: any need for further examinations cannot be predicted in advance. Ask who will coordinate the next steps if an unexpected finding needs assessment after you return home.
There is no universal annual schedule. Timing depends on the diagnosis, individual risk and purpose of surveillance.
The protocol and additional sequences affect duration. Confirm scanner time separately from the report delivery date.
Review it with a doctor alongside your symptoms and earlier results. An imaging finding alone is not a final diagnosis.
