A PSA blood test measures prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by prostate tissue. It can contribute to investigating prostate symptoms, an informed discussion about early cancer detection, or monitoring an established prostate cancer diagnosis. An elevated level is not proof of cancer: benign enlargement, inflammation and other circumstances can affect it. A low result does not completely exclude cancer either. The reason for testing determines how the number should be interpreted.
A urology consultation abroad may help when a persistent rise, previous MRI or biopsy findings leave uncertainty about further investigation. Send the complete PSA history with dates, laboratory details, medicines and any prostate treatment records before booking. Ask whether another locally collected sample would be sufficient and whether specialist review could change the plan. Travelling just to obtain a routine blood measurement may add little; the useful outcome is a clear explanation of risk, options and follow-up.

Doctors may request PSA when assessing urinary symptoms or following prostate cancer treatment. Testing without symptoms requires a discussion of age, family history, other risk factors, general health and personal preferences. Possible benefits of earlier detection must be weighed against false alarms, missed cancers and finding slow-growing disease that may lead to unnecessary investigation or treatment.
Follow the clinic's preparation instructions. Common advice includes avoiding ejaculation and vigorous exercise, especially cycling, for 48 hours before collection. Report a recent urine infection, urinary retention, catheter procedure or prostate biopsy; the clinician may need to adjust the timing rather than interpret a temporarily altered value.
List all medicines and supplements. Finasteride and dutasteride can lower PSA, so the interpreting doctor needs to know about them. Do not stop prescribed medication or try to correct the number yourself. Fasting is usually unnecessary for PSA alone, but check whether other blood tests collected together have different requirements.
Blood is usually taken from an arm vein in a few minutes. Tell staff about needle anxiety or previous fainting. The sampling appointment and laboratory reporting are separate stages; ask when the report will be available and who will explain it. Referral to another laboratory or repeat testing may extend the wait. Keep the complete report with its units and reference range.
There is no single PSA number that diagnoses cancer in everyone. A new elevation may warrant a repeat sample under comparable conditions. The urology team considers symptoms, examination, earlier values and other risk information when recommending MRI, additional markers or biopsy. A biopsy provides tissue for diagnosis when indicated; not everyone with a raised PSA needs one.
Request an itemised quote distinguishing total PSA, any requested free PSA measurement, blood collection and consultation. MRI, biopsy and pathology are separate investigations with separate preparation and costs unless explicitly included.
No. It calls for interpretation and sometimes further assessment; benign prostate conditions can also raise it.
Where practical, use the same assay and laboratory to make comparisons more consistent.
No. Expected values and trends depend on the treatment received. Discuss the report with the team managing your follow-up.
