GreenLight laser prostate vaporization, also called photoselective vaporization of the prostate, treats obstruction caused by benign prostate enlargement. An endoscope passes through the urethra, and laser energy vaporizes obstructing tissue to create a channel for urine. It may be considered when symptoms or complications justify an intervention after urological assessment. It is not an operation to remove the whole prostate for cancer. Urinary complaints can have several causes, so suitability cannot be established from prostate size alone.
Patients may consider an overseas consultation to compare procedures or review treatment when medicines have not provided adequate relief. Share urinary test results, imaging and a medication list, including blood thinners. Ask why vaporization is proposed, what alternatives are suitable and how catheter care and follow-up will be arranged. Plan access to help after discharge and coordination with a urologist at home. Choosing a laser technique does not remove the need to discuss complications and possible persistent symptoms.

GreenLight laser vaporization treats the obstructing part of an enlarged prostate. A urologist reviews symptoms, bladder emptying, previous treatment and complications such as retention. Assessment also considers other sources of urinary symptoms. The urology section is a route to explore the specialty; ask why this operation is preferred to medicines or other appropriate procedures.
Under anesthesia, the surgeon introduces an endoscope through the urethra and uses a laser fiber to vaporize obstructing tissue. An external incision is not required. A temporary urinary catheter is usually placed afterward. The technique differs from HoLEP, which separates and removes tissue. These approaches have different features that should be discussed in relation to your condition.
Vaporized tissue is not available as a conventional specimen for pathology. If there is a concern about prostate cancer, discuss its assessment before surgery. Do not assume that a procedure for benign obstruction replaces a cancer investigation.
The team may review urine tests, prostate assessment and bladder function. Tell clinicians about medicines, allergies, implanted devices and previous urinary procedures. Medication adjustments and fasting instructions must come from the treating team. For care abroad, agree when and where the catheter will be removed and what happens if urination remains difficult afterward.
Burning, frequency, blood in the urine and temporary urinary difficulties can occur during recovery. Follow the instructions on activity and wound-free but still internal healing. Possible complications include infection, bleeding, urethral scarring, leakage and a need for further treatment. Changes in ejaculation can affect fertility. Some symptoms may persist if bladder problems contribute.
Ask for guidance on urgent symptoms, including significant bleeding or difficulty passing urine, and a contact route after discharge. Before returning home, obtain the procedure details and follow-up recommendations. Travel timing should reflect catheter care, review and recovery rather than an assumed short stay.
Costs depend on investigations, anesthesia, the operation, catheter care, observation and follow-up. Check how additional admission, repeat catheterization or complications would be charged. Compare the complete care pathway and the proposed clinical approach together.
