Transurethral microwave thermotherapy, or TUMT, applies heat to tissue in a benignly enlarged prostate. A special catheter carrying a microwave antenna is passed through the urethra. Energy heats selected tissue to reduce the obstruction to urine flow. The treated tissue changes over time, so the response cannot be judged solely by symptoms immediately after the session. The whole prostate is not removed, and this technique is not intended to treat prostate cancer.
TUMT is an older minimally invasive technology with a limited role in contemporary practice. It may be discussed in particular circumstances, but comparison with available medicines and procedures must include the possibility of further treatment. Assessment considers prostate anatomy, bladder function, other illnesses and implanted devices. A consultation abroad may help review the reasoning behind a proposed treatment and obtain another opinion. Check equipment availability, catheter arrangements, follow-up and access to assistance at home before travelling. A single thermal treatment cannot guarantee lasting symptom relief.

Microwave thermotherapy addresses urinary problems attributed to benign prostate enlargement. Enlargement alone does not explain every symptom. Older studies show potential symptom relief, but long-term effects are uncertain and retreatment is more likely than after resection in studied groups. The technique has been displaced by other options in many programmes. Discuss alternatives with a urology specialist, considering treatment tolerance, anatomy and your priorities.
Assessment reviews symptoms, their effect on sleep and daily activities, previous treatment, examination and urine tests. Flow measurements, residual urine assessment and prostate imaging help clarify obstruction. Kidney tests, cystoscopy or bladder function studies may be needed in selected cases. PSA testing is discussed separately because benign conditions can also raise the result. Tell the team about a pacemaker, defibrillator, pelvic metal or penile implants, urethral narrowing and previous prostate procedures. Compatibility with the particular system and anatomical suitability require verification. Agree medicine and anaesthesia instructions individually.
The antenna is positioned within the part of the urethra surrounded by the prostate. Temperature monitoring and cooling help limit heating of nearby tissues while microwave energy treats the selected area. Local anaesthesia is commonly used, sometimes with sedation. Report heat, pain, bladder discomfort or a strong urge to pass urine to staff. Initial swelling can obstruct flow, so temporary catheter drainage is often part of care. Improvement develops gradually as treated tissue changes. Treatment duration, observation and catheter removal depend on the equipment and the patient's condition.
Possible effects include burning, frequent urges, blood in the urine, infection, retention or temporary leakage. Irritative symptoms may persist, and another treatment may be needed. Discuss sexual effects even if some risks are expected to be lower than with certain operations. Fever, inability to urinate, a catheter that stops draining, severe pain or substantial bleeding needs urgent assessment. Obtain catheter care instructions and advice on activity and travel. Follow-up should assess symptoms and bladder emptying. Expenses include diagnostic work, equipment, anaesthesia, catheter support, monitoring and any further intervention.
No. TUMT uses a microwave antenna; TUNA delivers radiofrequency energy through needles.
Not necessarily. Early swelling can worsen flow before the treatment response develops.
No. Inadequate or short-lived relief may require another treatment approach.
