Angiography examines blood vessels to help locate narrowing, blockage, aneurysms or other vascular abnormalities and plan appropriate care. The name covers several methods. Catheter angiography introduces a thin tube into a vessel and uses contrast with X-ray guidance; CT angiography uses a scanner and usually an injection into an arm vein. MR angiography uses magnetic resonance, with or without contrast, and does not involve ionising radiation. These examinations are not interchangeable in every situation.
Specialist assessment abroad may be useful when complex vascular findings require a second opinion or an intervention is being considered. Before booking, send previous images and reports and ask which vessels need assessment, why the proposed method is appropriate and whether existing imaging is adequate. Clarify whether the appointment is purely diagnostic or could include a separately agreed treatment. An organised plan should also cover recovery, the written report and follow-up after returning home.

Angiography may examine vessels supplying the brain, heart, kidneys or limbs, depending on the clinical question. Ultrasound, CT or MR imaging may be sufficient in some cases. A catheter examination can provide detailed information and allow treatment during the same session when this has been planned and consented to. It does not automatically mean a stent will be inserted.
Report previous contrast reactions, kidney disease, bleeding problems, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and all medicines. The team may check kidney function and clotting before a catheter procedure. Obtain individual instructions for anticoagulants, diabetes treatment, eating and drinking; do not stop medicines yourself. For MR angiography, implants and metal must also be assessed for scanner safety. Discuss support for anxiety or difficulty lying still before the appointment.
During catheter angiography, local anaesthetic numbs the access site, often in the groin or wrist. The doctor guides the catheter under imaging, injects contrast and records the vessels. Contrast may cause a brief warm sensation. After removal, pressure or a closure device controls the puncture site.
A catheter examination commonly takes about 30 minutes to two hours, but complex studies or treatment can take longer. Preparation and several hours of observation add to the visit; an overnight stay is sometimes needed. CT and MR appointments have different timings. Ask separately about examination time, discharge and availability of the final report.
Bruising and soreness can occur after arterial access. Less common risks include significant bleeding, infection, vessel injury, contrast reactions or kidney problems; risks vary with the procedure and health history. Follow written instructions for activity, driving, medicines and travel, and arrange an escort when required. Uncontrolled bleeding, severe swelling, breathing difficulty or a newly cold, pale or numb limb requires urgent medical assessment.
Request a quote naming the technique, region, contrast, pre-procedure tests, sedation if needed, observation and specialist interpretation. An additional intervention has its own consent and charges. Other investigations are listed under diagnostics.
No. CT and MR methods image vessels without advancing a catheter through an artery.
Sometimes during a catheter procedure, if clinically appropriate and agreed in advance.
Confirm the recovery and travel plan with the treating team before buying tickets.
