Gallium-68 PSMA PET/CT uses an injected radioactive tracer that binds to prostate-specific membrane antigen, a protein often present at increased levels in prostate cancer. PET records the tracer’s distribution, while CT helps locate the findings. Specialists may request the examination for selected initial staging questions or suspected recurrence when PSA rises after treatment. It is not needed for every patient with prostate cancer. The choice depends on the diagnosis, previous treatment and how the result could affect management.
Gallium-68 PSMA is a radiopharmaceutical, not an MRI contrast agent. It differs from FDG and from gallium-68 DOTATATE imaging used for different targets, including certain neuroendocrine tumours. Before booking, confirm the exact tracer and whether the CT component requires separate contrast. Send pathology results, PSA history and previous images, and obtain the department’s preparation instructions. A negative scan cannot exclude prostate cancer, while uptake can occur in benign conditions or other cancers. Request a personalised quote and clarify the reporting and consultation arrangements.

PSMA imaging can help investigate disease spread in selected patients with newly diagnosed prostate cancer, particularly when the risk assessment warrants additional staging. It may also help locate suspected recurrence following treatment when PSA rises. The referral should state the clinical question rather than simply request a general cancer check. Your urologist or oncologist should explain how the findings could change care. Related information is available in our oncology section.
Gallium-68 identifies the radioactive isotope; PSMA identifies the imaging target. The complete tracer name matters because different gallium-labelled agents answer different questions.
These examinations are not interchangeable. A PSMA radiotracer is also distinct from contrast material used in MRI or CT. Ask the clinic to match the tracer to your referral before confirming the appointment.
PSMA uptake is not exclusive to prostate cancer: benign processes and some other tumours can also show activity. Conversely, small lesions or disease with low PSMA expression may not be visible. A negative result therefore does not rule out prostate cancer, and a positive focus needs specialist interpretation.
The team considers PSA results, pathology, earlier scans and treatment history. Further imaging or tissue assessment may be needed for uncertain findings. The scan complements clinical evaluation; treatment decisions should be discussed with the treating specialist.
Obtain instructions specific to the PSMA tracer regarding food, fluids and medicines; preparation can differ from FDG PET. Tell the department about current treatments and difficulties lying still. After injection, there is an uptake period before scanning. Follow staff instructions about hydration and emptying your bladder.
The CT component may be used mainly for localisation or performed as a diagnostic scan. Iodinated contrast is conditional and requires separate safety assessment, including previous reactions and kidney function when relevant. PET and CT involve ionising radiation. Follow the department’s advice on close contact with young children and pregnant people afterwards.
No. The clinical question, risk and previous treatment determine whether it is useful.
Preparation, tracer uptake and imaging all contribute. Ask for the visit estimate and report turnaround separately.
Confirm the tracer, CT protocol, any contrast, images, report and results consultation. Obtain a written quote and agree how it will reach your doctor.
