An oncologist consultation reviews a suspected or confirmed cancer diagnosis and helps organise the next steps in investigation or treatment. The specialist evaluates the available evidence, the extent of disease and the patient's general health. A scan or abnormal blood result alone may not establish cancer: tissue examination and other findings often provide essential information. The appointment should explain the diagnosis in understandable terms and identify which decisions can already be made.
Patients may seek an opinion abroad before starting treatment, when recommendations differ or when an existing plan needs reassessment. A useful review depends on complete pathology, imaging and treatment records rather than promotional descriptions of a particular technique. The second opinion may support the original plan, suggest an alternative or request more evidence. Ask how its recommendations will be coordinated with the current team and whether any investigation could affect timing. Seeking advice should not mean stopping prescribed therapy or postponing urgent care without medical agreement.

The oncologist reviews symptoms, examination findings, prior diagnoses and treatment. A pathology report describes findings from cells or tissue and may contain information relevant to treatment selection. If material has already been collected, ask whether specialist review requires slides or other stored samples.
Imaging helps answer questions about the location and extent of disease. Laboratory findings are interpreted with the rest of the evidence; neither a normal nor an abnormal blood result can independently settle every cancer question. Clarifying missing information is different from repeating all previous tests.
Stage describes the extent of cancer, using a system appropriate to its type. Many solid tumours are assessed through information about the primary tumour, lymph nodes and distant spread, but not every cancer uses the same system. Ask which findings establish the reported stage and whether any result remains pending.
Biomarker testing may identify a feature that helps select or avoid a particular treatment. It can also produce findings that do not change care. A matching biomarker suggests that a therapy may be useful; it does not guarantee response. The specialist should explain whether testing is relevant to the diagnosis and what its result would change.
Cancer care may involve medical oncology, surgery or radiation oncology. Ask which specialist is responsible for each part of the proposed plan and how the recommendations fit together. Clarify the aim of treatment, likely burdens, alternatives and the method of assessing response.
A second opinion can confirm the existing recommendation. Agreement does not mean the review was unnecessary, just as a different recommendation is not proof that the earlier doctor was wrong. Understanding the evidence and the remaining uncertainty is more useful than expecting a particular answer.
Organise pathology reports, original imaging files, dated laboratory results and details of previous treatment, including complications. Provide medicines, allergies and other health conditions. Ask which documents need translation and how any tissue material should be transferred.
The consultation itself does not require preparation for an operation or biopsy. If an additional procedure is proposed, its preparation and risks must be explained separately. Do not stop prescribed treatment independently while waiting for the opinion.
Confirm which costs include record review, new tests and a follow-up discussion. Test processing may continue after the first appointment, so establish who will explain the final results and communicate with your local clinicians. Related information is available in the oncology section.
Not always. Tissue findings may be needed.
No. Results require clinical interpretation.
Timing and any changes must be agreed medically.
