Lung cancer surgery removes a tumour together with an appropriate amount of surrounding lung tissue and assesses nearby lymph nodes. It is considered mainly for non-small cell lung cancer that can be completely removed in a person able to tolerate the operation. A small lesion does not automatically mean a small operation: its position, lymph node findings and the patient’s breathing capacity all influence the plan. Surgery has a much more limited role in small cell lung cancer.
Patients considering treatment abroad may seek another review of whether their cancer is operable, whether lung-sparing resection is suitable, or how surgery fits with drug treatment. A useful comparison includes specialist thoracic assessment, pathology review, the proposed extent of removal and rehabilitation after discharge. Ask who will explain the final tissue results and arrange continuing cancer care at home, rather than comparing the surgical procedure alone.

Lobectomy removes one lung lobe. Segmentectomy or wedge resection removes less tissue and may suit carefully selected small peripheral tumours; adequate margins and lymph node assessment remain essential. A sleeve resection reconstructs an airway and can sometimes avoid removing an entire lung. Pneumonectomy is reserved for situations requiring whole-lung removal.
The multidisciplinary team reviews stage, tissue diagnosis and fitness. Some operable cancers need chemotherapy or eligible immunotherapy around surgery. Molecular results can guide additional targeted treatment. Most small cell cancers require a different treatment strategy. If surgery is unsuitable, radiotherapy for lung cancer may be considered.
Bring biopsy reports, scan images and details of previous treatment. Staging may require PET-CT, brain imaging and sampling chest lymph nodes. Lung function tests and sometimes exercise testing estimate breathing reserve after the proposed resection; heart health, nutrition and other illnesses also matter.
The team provides instructions about fasting and medicines. Smoking cessation support and preparation for breathing exercises can help recovery. Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon operates through an open incision or an appropriate video-assisted or robotic approach. Conversion to open surgery may be necessary. The removed tissue and nodes undergo pathology examination.
Chest drains remove air and fluid while the team monitors recovery. Pain control, supported mobilisation and physiotherapy help breathing and activity. Risks include prolonged air leakage, pneumonia, bleeding, clots, abnormal heart rhythms and persistent pain or breathlessness. Severe or worsening breathing difficulty, significant coughing of blood, fever or chest pain needs prompt medical assessment.
Discharge and travel depend on recovery and the surgeon’s advice. Follow-up reviews the final stage, additional treatment and surveillance scans. Cost depends on the resection, access method, staging, hospital care, complications and rehabilitation; check whether subsequent oncology treatment is included.
No. Many operations remove a lobe or a smaller area, depending on tumour features and safe surgical margins.
No. Suitability depends on anatomy, extent of disease and the team’s assessment; the access method does not determine cancer control alone.
Sometimes, but final pathology and tumour biology may indicate further drug treatment. Follow-up remains necessary even after complete removal.
