Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images without ionising radiation. A doctor may request it to investigate symptoms, assess a joint or an internal organ, or monitor a known condition. The examination is planned around a specific clinical question: the body area, imaging protocol and need for contrast should match the referral rather than a general package name.
When comparing MRI appointments, share your referral and previous imaging before confirming the booking. Ask the clinic to specify the examination included in its quotation, preparation instructions, arrangements for receiving images and the expected reporting date. Mention implants, possible pregnancy and difficulty with enclosed spaces early so the imaging team can assess your needs. If you are travelling for the examination, leave room in your plans for preparation and any agreed follow-up discussion; receiving images and receiving a medical interpretation are separate steps.

MRI can help assess spinal and soft-tissue problems, joint injuries, and selected abdominal or pelvic conditions. It may support treatment planning or follow-up. Your referral should identify the area and question to investigate; a targeted examination has a different purpose from a whole-body screening package. Contrast is used only when appropriate for that question.
Follow the imaging department's instructions about food, drink and medicines; preparation varies with the examination. Bring your referral, earlier images and reports, and a medication list. Disclose previous operations, kidney disease, prior contrast reactions and possible pregnancy. Remove jewellery and other items as directed. Check beforehand whether documents need translation and which language the report will use.
Metal in the body does not automatically rule out MRI. The team must identify each implant or device and verify its MRI safety conditions; bring an implant card if available. A previous scan is not a substitute for this check. During pregnancy, clinicians can consider MRI when clinically needed. Gadolinium contrast is generally avoided in pregnancy and requires a separate assessment of necessity.
You lie on a table while images are acquired in a series of sequences. Staying still matters, and some examinations involve breath-holding instructions. The scanner makes loud knocking sounds; wear the hearing protection provided. Tell staff if positioning is painful. Discuss claustrophobia in advance. Sedation is an option only if a clinician arranges it, with preparation, monitoring and transport instructions.
Request an itemised quotation naming the body area, whether contrast or sedation is included, and any separate consultation or translation fees. Prices vary by location and examination. Confirm how to obtain the image files and written report and who will explain the findings. Plan travel around the agreed appointment and reporting arrangements, allowing for any additional review requested by your doctor.
No. Some examinations answer the clinical question without an injection. See the separate guide to MRI with contrast when this has been proposed.
No. Safety screening, changing and any additional preparation take time beyond image acquisition. Ask for the expected total visit length before booking onward travel.
The radiologist needs to interpret the images. Report delivery has its own timetable, and your treating doctor should relate the findings to your symptoms and other tests. Confirm both the reporting date and follow-up arrangements.
