Understand the planned investigation

Bone marrow produces red cells, white cells and platelets. Aspiration examines cells in liquid marrow; a trephine biopsy also shows tissue structure. Tests may investigate unexplained blood count abnormalities, suspected blood cancers or marrow involvement, or assess treatment response. The referral itself does not establish a cancer diagnosis. Preparation and sample collection

Provide medication and supplement lists, allergies and any history of bleeding. Changes to blood thinning medicines need the team's instructions. With local anaesthesia alone, eating and drinking are usually permitted; sedation may require fasting and an escort. Confirm the actual plan rather than applying instructions from another procedure.

Samples are usually taken from the back of the pelvic bone. The practitioner cleans the skin and gives local anaesthetic. Aspiration may cause a brief sharp pain, while a core biopsy can cause pressure or discomfort. Tell the team if pain is significant. Sampling commonly takes about 15–30 minutes, with additional time for preparation and observation. Pressure and a dressing are applied afterwards.

Laboratory results, aftercare and costs

Karyotyping assesses chromosome number and structure; FISH looks for selected changes. These tests answer different questions. Findings are interpreted with the other results, and a normal karyotype does not exclude every disorder. An inadequate sample may limit testing. Reports can take days or weeks depending on the investigations; ask when the complete set will be available.

Follow instructions for the dressing, activity and pain relief. Soreness and bruising may occur. Risks include bleeding, infection and rare injury to nearby tissues. Seek medical advice for ongoing bleeding, worsening pain, increasing redness, wound discharge or fever. After sedation, follow the driving restrictions provided.
