Bone marrow aspiration collects a liquid sample for laboratory examination. Cytogenetic analysis is a separate laboratory investigation that looks for chromosome changes in the sampled cells. A haematologist may request it when investigating a suspected blood or marrow disorder, classifying an established disease, planning treatment or assessing response. The choice of tests depends on the clinical question; having a marrow sample taken does not mean every possible genetic test will be performed.
Before arranging the procedure abroad, confirm whether the plan includes aspiration alone or also a trephine biopsy, which removes a small tissue core. Ask which chromosome tests are requested, whether additional molecular tests are needed, and what the quotation includes. Send previous blood counts, marrow reports and treatment records for review. Agree the pain-control plan, laboratory arrangements and a consultation to discuss the findings. Sample collection, laboratory analysis and clinical interpretation are distinct stages with different timings.

Aspiration provides liquid marrow cells, while a trephine biopsy provides a core that shows tissue structure. You may need one or both, depending on the assessment. Cytogenetic testing examines chromosome number or structure and can contribute to disease classification, treatment planning or monitoring. It complements other marrow investigations.
A karyotype surveys chromosomes in dividing cells and can identify larger numerical or structural changes. It requires cell culture. FISH uses fluorescent probes to investigate selected genes or chromosome regions, so the requested targets matter. A negative targeted test does not assess every possible abnormality.
Molecular sequencing is a different investigation and is not automatically included in a cytogenetic request. The haematologist interprets the findings alongside blood counts, cell appearance, tissue findings and other relevant tests.
A trained clinician usually collects the sample from the pelvic bone under local anaesthetic. Pressure and discomfort can still occur, particularly during aspiration. Discuss pain control, anxiety and any proposed sedation beforehand. Tell the team about medicines, including blood thinners, allergies and any bleeding history; follow its individual preparation plan.
Possible complications include pain, bruising, bleeding and infection. Obtain written aftercare instructions and a contact route for persistent bleeding, fever or worsening pain at the sampling site.
Send the referral question and previous laboratory reports before booking. Ask whether existing slides or other stored material could be reviewed, and let the clinical teams arrange any transfer. Collection and laboratory staff should agree specimen handling in advance: chromosome testing may require a fresh sample prepared differently from material for other tests.
Request an itemised quotation covering aspiration, any trephine biopsy, anaesthesia or sedation, chromosome testing, additional investigations and specialist review. Confirm the report language, translation options and how later results will reach your doctor at home. Related information is available in the oncology overview.
No. They collect different types of material. Ask which procedure is planned and why each sample is needed.
No. Sample quality and cell growth can limit analysis. The specialist may recommend another method or further sampling if results are insufficient.
Ask the laboratory for the expected timeframe for each test. Some tests require cell culture, and analysis and reporting continue after collection; the consultation may occur separately.
No. Results have method-specific limits and must be interpreted with the full clinical and laboratory assessment.
