Leukaemia chemotherapy targets malignant cells in the blood and bone marrow. In acute leukaemias it often forms an important part of treatment intended to achieve remission and reduce relapse risk. The programme depends on the precise diagnosis, genetic features, age, overall fitness and previous treatment. Chronic leukaemias follow different pathways: some patients need monitoring or targeted medicines, rather than the same chemotherapy used for acute disease.
Patients considering treatment abroad may seek diagnostic review, molecular assessment or advice from a specialist haematology team. Planning should cover monitoring, support when blood counts are low, infection management and later treatment near home. Acute leukaemia may require urgent care, and arranging travel must not delay necessary treatment. Remission does not always mean that the programme is finished or that cure is certain. Before choosing a centre, clarify the proposed stages, possible admission, emergency cover and how the two clinical teams will maintain continuity.

A haematology team reviews blood, bone marrow and molecular findings. Acute myeloid and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia need different programmes. Age, organ function and complication risk affect treatment intensity. Chronic myeloid leukaemia is usually treated primarily with targeted drugs; chronic lymphocytic leukaemia may initially be monitored and now commonly uses targeted approaches when treatment is needed.
In acute disease, induction aims to achieve remission, and further treatment reduces relapse risk. Acute lymphoblastic programmes may include maintenance and treatment to prevent disease in the central nervous system. Targeted medicines, immunotherapy or stem cell transplantation may be relevant. The sequence is individual, and adult and paediatric programmes are not interchangeable.
Blood and marrow testing assess response. Sensitive tests for measurable residual disease can identify leukaemia cells missed by routine examination. Results help guide subsequent decisions. A negative test means disease was not detected at that test's sensitivity; it does not remove the need for follow-up.
Send diagnostic findings, molecular reports and records of previous medicines and dates. The team checks blood counts, organ function, infections and current medication. Discuss fertility and pregnancy prevention before treatment when relevant. Drugs may use several routes; intensive treatment can require admission and central venous access. Do not change doses or timing yourself.
Leukaemia and treatment can suppress normal blood production. Transfusions and medicines to prevent or treat infection may be needed. Bleeding, fatigue, nausea, mouth soreness and other regimen-specific effects can occur. Rapid destruction of malignant cells can cause tumour lysis syndrome: changes in blood chemistry may damage the kidneys and other organs. The team assesses this risk and arranges monitoring and preventive measures.
Fever, shivering or sudden illness requires immediate contact, even without a high temperature. Breathing difficulty, confusion or uncontrolled bleeding needs emergency care. Obtain a written action plan and an out-of-hours contact before leaving hospital.
Agree travel safety, the necessary stay and handover to clinicians at home. Clarify charges for medicines, molecular tests, admission, transfusions and complication care. Later stages and transplantation, if indicated, may be separate. Access to urgent help between courses must be organised before departure.
No. The subtype and indications determine the approach.
Not necessarily. Further stages and monitoring may be required.
No. Risk, response and fitness guide that decision.
Delay in acute leukaemia can be dangerous; a haematologist must assess urgency.
