Brain MRI produces detailed images of brain structures using magnetic fields and radio waves, without ionising radiation. A clinician may recommend it to investigate a suspected brain lesion, seizures or other neurological findings, or to compare an established abnormality over time. The referral should explain the symptoms, relevant history and question the scan needs to answer. Headache alone does not automatically mean MRI is necessary; the decision follows clinical assessment.
When arranging a brain MRI abroad, send the referral, previous radiology reports and original images for review before booking. Confirm whether the proposed examination addresses your clinician's question, whether contrast is indicated, and how you will receive the images and written report. Ask about report translation, specialist interpretation and any additional charges. Advance discussion of implants, pregnancy, kidney problems or claustrophobia helps the imaging team plan an appropriate appointment.

Doctors use brain MRI to assess structural abnormalities, including tumours, stroke-related changes, infection and fluid-space enlargement. It may also help investigate seizures or selected neurological symptoms. The choice of examination depends on the history and examination findings. For diagnosed migraine or tension-type headache, imaging solely for reassurance is generally not recommended.
Tell the imaging team about implanted devices, previous surgery and possible metal fragments. Bring the implant identification card if available: suitability depends on the exact device and scanning conditions, so metal is not an automatic prohibition. Report pregnancy or possible pregnancy, kidney disease and previous contrast reactions. Kidney-function testing may be needed if contrast is planned. Follow the centre's specific instructions about food, medicines and clothing.
Discuss claustrophobia before booking. Ask what support or medically prescribed sedation can be arranged, and whether you will need an accompanying adult afterwards.
You lie on a moving table with your head positioned for imaging. Keeping still helps prevent blurred images. The scanner makes loud sounds, so hearing protection is required. Staff can communicate with you during the scan. The acquisition time and the radiologist's written-report turnaround are separate; confirm both when organising travel. A referring clinician should explain the findings and any next steps.
Send previous brain MRI images in their original DICOM format, alongside reports and the referral. Ask how to transfer them securely and whether a translated report is needed. For a second opinion, confirm that the reviewing specialist will receive the full examination rather than screenshots.
Request an itemised quotation covering the examination, any contrast, additional sequences, sedation if needed, reporting and consultations. Confirm which services are included and arrange access to the images after returning home. For broader background, see the MRI guide.
Not automatically. The radiologist and referring clinician decide whether contrast would add useful information for the specific question. Discuss individual benefits and risks; see MRI with contrast.
No scan provides that guarantee. MRI findings need clinical interpretation; further tests or tissue sampling may be needed to establish a cancer diagnosis.
Ask the centre to review the referral and available records first, particularly when comparing a known lesion. Confirm the intended protocol before finalising travel.
Ask the centre for its reporting arrangements and language options. Finishing the scan does not mean the written interpretation is immediately available.
