Gallium-68 imaging and MRI describe different parts of an examination. Gallium-68 labels radioactive tracers used for positron emission tomography (PET); it is not the usual gadolinium-based contrast used in MRI. PET can be combined with MRI to bring functional and anatomical images together. If your referral or clinic offer says MRI with gallium-68, ask the imaging team to confirm the complete examination name, the tracer and the clinical question before booking.
Planning this assessment abroad requires agreement between the referring doctor and the receiving imaging department. Send the referral, diagnosis and previous imaging for review, and obtain written confirmation of whether PET/MRI, PET/CT or a separate MRI is intended. Ask the clinic to confirm availability of the prescribed tracer and how it will deliver the report and images. Compare quotations for the same protocol, including any separate MRI contrast and consultation, rather than treating every gallium-labelled examination as one interchangeable service.

Gallium-68 is a radioactive isotope attached to a molecule for PET imaging. Gadolinium-containing agents enhance selected MRI examinations and have a different purpose. Neither name identifies the complete scan by itself. A combined PET/MRI examination still involves radiation from its PET tracer, although MRI acquisition does not use ionising radiation.
A gallium-68 PSMA-targeted tracer may be used for selected prostate cancer questions. Gallium-68 DOTATATE targets somatostatin receptors in selected neuroendocrine tumour investigations. These tracers assess different biological targets and cannot simply replace one another. Your specialist should identify the intended agent and explain how the findings could influence the next clinical decision.
The anatomical component may be MRI or CT, depending on the referral, clinical question and available service. Ask for the intended scan coverage and whether an additional diagnostic examination is required. Do not assume a quotation for PET/CT covers PET/MRI. The separate PET/MRI guide explains the combined method; gallium-68 PSMA PET/CT has a different protocol.
Obtain instructions for the exact tracer and scan combination. Mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, current medicines and previous reactions before the appointment. For an MRI component, provide implant identification and tell the team about claustrophobia. It must check device-specific scanning conditions. Any gadolinium contrast is a separate decision, with its own assessment of relevant risks and kidney function when indicated.
Allow for registration, tracer administration, the uptake period and image acquisition. Ask about total visit length separately from the report deadline. Follow the department's written instructions about feeding or temporary close-contact precautions after the examination; timings depend on the agent and your circumstances.
Request a breakdown identifying the tracer, imaging modality, scan coverage, any additional contrast, report and consultation. Clarify specimen or document requirements, cancellation terms and what happens if the prescribed tracer cannot be supplied. Agree who will interpret the complete study with your history and earlier results. An imaging finding may need further assessment rather than providing a final diagnosis alone.
It is used to label PET radiotracers. Confirm the exact combined examination named on your referral.
No. The target molecule and indication must be specified.
The referring specialist and imaging team should select it for the clinical question.
