Radiosurgery for a brain tumour uses carefully focused radiation to treat a defined target without opening the skull. It may be considered for selected brain metastases, certain benign tumours or a surgical cavity after tumour removal. Gamma Knife and suitably equipped linear accelerators are different ways of delivering stereotactic treatment. Depending on size and location, radiation may be given in one session or divided into several sessions. The aim is to control the treated lesion; the tumour is not physically removed.
Treatment abroad may provide a specialist review of MRI findings and a joint assessment by neurosurgery and radiation oncology. The team should compare radiosurgery with observation, surgery and other radiotherapy for the particular case. No equipment name guarantees success or freedom from neurological complications. Before travelling, agree the planning visits, symptom management, timing of return and arrangements for repeat MRI and medical review at home.

Decisions consider tumour type, size, number of lesions, location, symptoms, previous radiation and overall cancer status. Radiosurgery can be useful for small, well-defined targets, including selected metastases and benign tumours. Large lesions causing significant pressure may need surgery or another approach. Diffuse tumours are not generally managed with focused treatment alone. Discuss the full programme with the oncology team.
MRI and planning CT guide the target and dose while identifying sensitive structures. A custom mask or a frame attached with pins helps maintain the planned head position. The team explains which system is used and any discomfort from frame placement.
Provide previous scans and radiation records, a medicine list, information about implants and contrast reactions, and any history of seizures or claustrophobia. Fasting and medication instructions vary with sedation, imaging and technique. Continue or change steroids and antiseizure treatment only according to the prescribed plan.
Staff check alignment with imaging and deliver the calculated radiation from multiple directions. The patient remains still while the team monitors and communicates from outside the room. The beam itself is not felt. Treatment may be outpatient, but assessment, planning and delivery can require separate visits. Some cases need several fractions to balance tumour control and risk to nearby tissue.
Fatigue, headache, nausea, local hair loss and frame-site soreness can occur. Brain swelling may worsen existing symptoms or trigger seizures. Delayed radiation injury, including radiation necrosis, can cause neurological problems and require medicines or further intervention. Risks depend on the treated volume, location, dose and previous treatment.
A new seizure, sudden weakness, speech changes, severe worsening headache or repeated vomiting needs urgent assessment. Activity, driving and flying require individual advice. Serial MRI helps assess control and distinguish treatment-related changes from progression; a lesion may remain visible even after successful control. Treatment of brain metastases also requires attention to cancer elsewhere.
Costs depend on imaging, planning, the number of targets and sessions, anaesthesia if needed and supportive care. Confirm the follow-up schedule and access to urgent help after returning home.
No. Its biological effects develop over time, and follow-up scans are essential.
No. Some techniques use a custom mask and image guidance.
