CyberKnife is a robotic radiotherapy system that directs X-rays towards a defined treatment target using imaging to check positioning. Despite its name, it does not cut tissue or remove a tumour. The system can deliver stereotactic radiosurgery for selected targets in the brain and stereotactic body radiotherapy for suitable lesions elsewhere. Treatment may be given in one or several sessions, depending on the target, nearby organs and the prescribed plan.
Patients considering CyberKnife abroad need a clinical assessment, rather than simply access to a particular machine. Suitability depends on the diagnosis, tumour size and location, disease elsewhere, previous radiation and the aim of treatment. Other radiotherapy systems may offer appropriate stereotactic treatment too. A radiation oncologist should explain the alternatives and whether surgery or systemic therapy is also needed. Planning scans, possible marker placement, treatment sessions and follow-up all affect travel arrangements. The approach can avoid an operation in selected cases, but it still carries radiation risks and does not guarantee control of the disease.

CyberKnife focuses radiation on a planned target. It may be used for selected brain lesions, some localized cancers or limited metastatic deposits, depending on the clinical situation. The team decides whether the aim is lasting local control, symptom relief or another part of a combined programme. Treating one lesion does not automatically treat cancer elsewhere. The machine's name alone cannot determine whether treatment is appropriate.
The radiation oncologist reviews diagnostic images, pathology where available and previous treatment records. A planning CT and sometimes other scans help outline the target and sensitive structures. Immobilisation may involve a fitted mask or body support. Some body treatments require small implanted markers for tracking; placement is a separate procedure with its own risks. Other targets can be tracked without them. Ask what preparation your particular plan requires.
The patient lies on a treatment couch while the robotic system delivers beams from different directions. Imaging checks alignment, and selected tracking methods account for target movement. Staff observe from outside the room and can communicate with the patient. The schedule and length of appointments depend on the prescribed treatment. Tell the team about pain, anxiety or difficulty remaining still, so positioning support can be arranged.
Many patients receive treatment as outpatients, but monitoring needs vary. Fatigue, nausea or local discomfort can occur. Other risks depend on the organ: brain treatment can cause swelling or radiation injury; chest treatment may cause lung inflammation; treatment near the bowel or urinary tract can affect those tissues. Late effects are possible. New neurological symptoms, significant breathlessness or severe pain require prompt medical advice. Follow-up scans assess response over time; they need specialist interpretation because radiation changes can resemble disease.
The estimate includes assessment, planning, any marker procedure, radiation delivery and review. Compare the whole programme in the oncology section and clarify who will supervise follow-up after returning home.
No. CyberKnife delivers external radiation. Marker placement, when needed, is a separate invasive procedure.
No. The number depends on the target and the safe treatment plan.
No. External beam treatment does not leave a radioactive source in the body.
Response develops over time. The team schedules examinations and imaging appropriate to the condition.
