PET/CT combines positron emission tomography with computed tomography in one examination. PET records the distribution of an injected radioactive tracer, while CT provides anatomical images that help locate the findings. Doctors may request it for selected cancers to assess disease extent, treatment response or suspected recurrence, and for certain non-cancer conditions. The tracer is chosen for the clinical question: FDG is common, but other tracers are used. A PET radiotracer is different from contrast material that may be given for the CT component.
Preparation depends on the tracer and protocol. Before booking, send your referral and earlier results, and tell the department about diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicines and previous contrast reactions. Obtain its instructions for fasting and medication use. PET/CT involves ionising radiation, and abnormal uptake does not automatically mean cancer; inflammation or infection can also affect images. Ask what the quoted price includes, whether a diagnostic CT with contrast is planned, how to obtain the images and when the specialist report will be available.

In selected cancers, PET/CT can help establish the stage, assess treatment response or investigate suspected recurrence. Its value depends on the tumour type and the decision being considered. It is not required for every cancer or every follow-up visit. Specialists also use PET for selected neurological and cardiac questions, with different protocols. Your treating doctor should explain how the result may change care. Related information is available in our oncology section.
FDG is a radioactive glucose analogue used in many PET examinations. Other tracers target different processes; PSMA-targeted imaging, for example, is used in selected prostate cancer settings. These tests are not interchangeable. Confirm the exact tracer on the referral and the clinic’s ability to provide it before making travel plans.
The CT component may be used mainly to localise findings or may be a more detailed diagnostic examination. Iodinated CT contrast is not automatically included and is separate from the PET tracer. If contrast is planned, the team assesses previous reactions, kidney function and other relevant risks.
For FDG imaging, food, recent exercise and blood glucose can affect the result. Follow the department’s specific fasting and activity instructions. If you have diabetes, contact it before the appointment for an individual plan covering food, insulin or other medicines. Blood glucose may be checked before injection. Preparation for another tracer can differ.
Tell the team about pregnancy or breastfeeding in advance. It will assess whether to proceed and provide tracer-specific instructions for feeding and close contact afterwards. Both PET and CT involve radiation; exposure varies with the protocol. Mention difficulties lying still or anxiety so the team can plan support.
Inflammation, infection or recent treatment can cause increased tracer uptake and false-positive findings. PET/CT cannot detect every cancer or every lesion. The specialist interprets it alongside symptoms, previous imaging and pathology; further tests or biopsy may be necessary.
After the injection, rest as instructed before imaging. Allow for preparation and tracer uptake as well as scanning. Appointment length and report turnaround are separate; obtain both estimates before arranging travel.
No. Tracer uptake can have several explanations and requires clinical interpretation.
No. It depends on the tracer and protocol; diabetes requires instructions from the scanning department.
The tracer, CT protocol and additional services affect the quote. Request a written breakdown for your referral.
