Robot assisted hysterectomy removes the uterus through a laparoscopic approach using instruments controlled by the surgeon at a console. A da Vinci system provides a magnified view and assists instrument movement; it does not make treatment decisions or operate independently. The approach may be considered for selected benign conditions or cancer operations, after assessing the diagnosis, anatomy and alternatives. Availability of robotic equipment alone does not establish an advantage over conventional laparoscopy or vaginal surgery.
Before choosing treatment abroad, clarify why hysterectomy is recommended and exactly which organs would be removed. Removal of the uterus ends the ability to carry a pregnancy, while removal of both ovaries has separate hormonal consequences. Ask about fertility priorities, surgical risks, tissue examination and recovery arrangements. The most appropriate route depends on clinical needs and the team's assessment, particularly when cancer is suspected or confirmed.

Hysterectomy may be considered for fibroids, troublesome bleeding, endometriosis, prolapse or selected cancers. The reason for surgery determines its extent and whether alternatives are appropriate. Vaginal, conventional laparoscopic and open approaches should be discussed where relevant. Robotic assistance is one way to perform laparoscopy; it has not consistently shown better outcomes than conventional laparoscopy for benign hysterectomy.
Provide imaging, biopsy results when available, previous surgical records and a list of medicines. Discuss plans for the cervix, tubes and ovaries separately. If cancer is present, the operation must meet the requirements of that particular diagnosis. Anaesthetic assessment reviews other illnesses and surgical fitness. Follow individual instructions about fasting and medicines rather than adjusting treatment independently.
Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon works through small abdominal incisions while controlling robotic instruments from a console. A bedside team assists throughout. The uterus is detached and removed by a planned route. The surgeon may need to change to another approach if visibility, anatomy or a complication makes this safer. Removed tissue is examined to confirm the diagnosis.
Early care focuses on pain control, bladder function, mobility and prevention of blood clots. Discharge and recovery depend on the operation's extent and individual progress. Obtain instructions on wound care, lifting, activity and resuming vaginal sex. Small incisions do not mean that internal healing is complete.
Risks include bleeding, infection, clots, anaesthetic complications and injury to the bladder, ureters or bowel. Worsening pain, fever, heavy bleeding or breathing difficulty need prompt assessment. Removal of both ovaries before natural menopause can cause surgical menopause. Emotional effects and changes in sexual wellbeing also deserve support.
A written estimate should specify assessment, robotic surgery, anaesthesia, pathology, hospital care and follow-up. Arrange discussion of the pathology result, including further treatment if needed. Confirm travel advice and access to care at home. See the gynaecology section for related information.
No. The surgeon controls the instruments and directs the operation.
No. Their removal is a separate decision based on the diagnosis and risks.
No. Discuss fertility concerns before consenting to removal of the uterus.
