Radiation therapy for stomach cancer uses targeted radiation to treat a defined area. It may be combined with chemotherapy in selected circumstances, including some cancers that cannot be removed surgically or situations with a higher risk of cancer remaining after an operation. Radiation can also help control bleeding, pain or obstruction when symptom relief is the treatment goal. It is not a routine requirement for every person with gastric cancer.
The decision depends on the tumour type, stage, previous treatment, surgical findings and the patient's overall health. Most gastric cancers are adenocarcinomas; stomach lymphoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumours follow different treatment pathways. Planning includes imaging and assessment of nearby organs. Before travelling, request a written explanation of the proposed treatment goal, expected visits, nutritional support and arrangements for managing side effects and follow-up. Specialist assessment abroad may help clarify whether radiation adds value to the overall gastric cancer programme and arrange coordinated nutrition and oncology support, rather than selecting treatment solely because a machine is available.

For many operable gastric adenocarcinomas, surgery and systemic treatment are central to care. Radiation is considered selectively rather than added automatically. A multidisciplinary team reviews whether it could improve local control before an operation, after selected resections, or when surgery is unsuitable. Postoperative decisions consider surgical margins, lymph node assessment and treatment already received. Advanced disease may call for a shorter symptom-directed course to reduce bleeding or pain.
Bring the biopsy report, staging scans, operation report if available, and a complete treatment history. Clarify whether the recommendation concerns the stomach tumour, the surgical bed or another site. A planning CT helps define the target and protect surrounding structures, including the kidneys, liver and bowel. Positioning, stomach filling and breathing instructions depend on the centre's protocol. Image guidance checks alignment during treatment; it does not by itself measure the tumour's response.
External beam treatment delivers radiation from a machine and does not make the patient radioactive. Concurrent chemotherapy can increase treatment effects and toxicity, so its suitability requires individual assessment. Report nausea, reduced appetite, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea and fatigue early. A dietitian can help maintain intake, particularly after stomach surgery. Contact the team promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, develop dehydration or have increasing bleeding. Severe symptoms need urgent medical assessment rather than waiting for the next scheduled session.
Ask who will coordinate medicines, nutrition, urgent care and follow-up after returning home. The proposal should distinguish treatment costs from consultations, imaging, laboratory checks and accommodation. Learn more about radiotherapy and the broader oncology pathway.
No. Histology, disease extent, previous therapy and the surgical plan determine whether it has a useful role.
Selected patients who cannot undergo surgery may receive definitive chemoradiation. This requires specialist review and is not interchangeable with every surgical plan.
The prescribed dose and schedule depend on the goal, target and associated treatment. Request the actual plan before booking travel.
Nausea and appetite changes can occur. Nutrition support, prescribed symptom medicines and monitoring help manage these difficulties.
